How to add an IP blocklist to qBittorrent
#1
The clients BiglyBT, Vuze, Tixati and Transmission all easily accommodate an IP blocklist with URL entry and automatic updating.

Unfortunately, qBittorrent doesn't have URL entry and automatic updating, but it does allow manual entry of a blocklist. Some qBittorrent users have had trouble with that feature.

How to add an IP blocklist to qBittorrent:

These instructions are intended for qBittorrent on Linux. I have added another option for Windows and Mac users in Step 3 in case the Linux instructions don't work on those operating systems.

Go to the Level 1 blocklist page from I-Blocklist:

https://www.iblocklist.com/list?list=ydx...format=zip

1. In the Update URL box, right-click and select Save Link As.

2. Once the file is downloaded, extract it. You will notice that the extracted file is a .txt file instead of a .p2p file.

3. Right-click the extracted file and rename to ipfilter.p2p.

Alternate instruction for Windows and Mac users:

If the rename to .p2p doesn't work, open the extracted file in Notepad or a similar text editor program. Once opened, change the filename by selecting Save As from the File tab and rename the file to ipfilter.dat.

4. In qBittorrent, go to:

Tools>Preferences

In the Connection section, scroll down to IP Filtering.

5. Check the box Filter path and click the Browse button to the right to add your renamed file ipfilter.p2p (or ipfilter.dat) from your download/extracted location.

6. Once the file is added, click the Reload the filter button that is next to the Browse button that you just clicked. If the filters are added successfully, it will show you the number of rules added.

7. Check the box Apply to trackers.

8. Click Apply.

9. Exit qBittorrent and restart the program.

How to check if your blocklist is working successfully:

1. In qBittorrent, go to:

View>Log

In the menu that pops up, click on Show.

You will notice that a new tab, Execution Log, has opened next to the Transfers tab. Click the Execution Log tab.

2. In the Execution Log tab, look to the far right. You will see two vertical tabs - General and Blocked IPs.

3. Click the Blocked IPs tab. Leave it open for a while and you will see that the blocked IP addresses will appear as they scroll down the page with date and time markers.

4. To close the Execution Log tab, go to:

View>Log

Click on Show to deselect the option.

Note:

Since qBittorrent doesn't have automatic updating, you will have to download and add a new list periodically. Adding a list once a week should be fine.

How to remove the IP blocklist:

If you decide to remove the IP blocklist filtering from qBittorrent, go to:

1. Tools>Preferences

In the Connection section, scroll down to IP Filtering.

2. Uncheck the Filter path box.

3. Click Apply.

4. Exit qBittorrent and restart the program.

To verify that the blocklist is no longer enabled, return to View>Log>Show. On the Execution Log tab, go to Blocked IPs and you will see that no IP addresses are being blocked.
