Just use Windows 7 dude. I have no issues with 7, works fine for me and I have loads of hard drives all plugged in and they're fine. It does take a fair bit of experience to get Windows running right but if you know what you're doing you can learn how to do it all properly. I would stay well away from Linux it's a right bag of crap. It's all totally different okay I guess if you've got a lot of experience with it but most people haven't.
Don't let people think that just cause you use Windows it's all wrong, it's not I use it and I've managed to do tons of stuff with Windows and it's been excellent. I must admit the stuff I do in Windows there's no way I could do all those things in Linux because most of the time Linux won't do any of those things and it's just a pain in the arse to learn and not worth all the hassle at the end of the day, stick to Windows.
No wonder Linux is free, if you want something that's decent then buy a proper Windows and use that. If you want something decent then paying for it is the way. Linux might be okay for those that know what you're doing but really it's just free anybody can just download it and you don't have to pay anything but myself even after being away from it for years and years I came back again recently to have a look at a favourite distro that I like of Linux and I must say it's just as crap as it was all those years ago infact probably even worse actually. If you want the proper thing then buy it, yes Windows 10 is a mess but at least it can do the things that most people are used to. Believe me I would like to learn how to use Linux properly and avoid all the nasty brick walls I always end up coming up against, I could do with a proper teacher really to teach me it how you're supposed to learn but it's never going to happen I've got no one and when you look in all these books it's all just waffle all the time you really need somebody to show you properly like a proper teacher otherwise there's no point.

Regardless of the OS being Windows or Linux, this issue can happen with any and this wont solve OP's current problem.
This isn't a Windows vs Linux subject, stay on topic.
