Germany: Bavarian State Opera unleashes ‘cancel’ crusade against Netrebko, Gergiev
#1
The Bavarian State Opera halts cooperation with international opera star Anna Netrebko and Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, the opera's managing director, Serge Dorny, announced on his Twitter on Tuesday.

"In light of Russia's terrible offensive war in Ukraine and the lack of [political] distance between Valery Gergiev and Anna Netrebko, the Bavarian State Opera is cancelling the existing collaboration," Dorny said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter decided to remove Gergiev from his position as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Prior to this, Reiter had demanded that the conductor "clearly and unequivocally distance himself" from Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, but Gergiev, according to the mayor’s words, never did so. Gergiev has served as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra since 2015. His contract was until 2025.

Germany has unleashed a crusade of severing ties with Russian institutions and firms amid the events in Ukraine. Yesterday, one restaurant in Germany undertook discriminatory measures and decided to stop serving customers with Russian passports. Social media users report cases of aggression against Russians.
