DNS Server

Guys, why don't you run your own DNS server like OpenDNS or something. That way you could have your "artificial" domain. All the users need to do is set his DNS servers to yours.

Because the only way that would work is if everyone who wanted to access TPB changed every device they ever wanted access TPB on to use said DNS servers.

Needless to say, few people would know that would even be necessary, much less how to accomplish that.

Technically, that would mean every NS lookup, not just those relevant to TPB would be sent to the TPB DNS servers. It would be expensive to maintain a DNS network capable of handling millions of users hammering it daily. And when it was slow or offline, those millions would all of a sudden not be able resolve host names for anything unless they have a secondary server in their settings.

It would be a lot easier for everyone to just install Tor and use the .onion address.

Changing DNS servers ain't that big of a deal. Every device supports it easily.

Those people that would not know how/why to change the DNS servers would easily learn it. It's as difficult as installing TOR and accessing the .onion URL.

The lack of resources would indeed be a problem I guess. But what if you wouldn't really resolve the NS lookup but use a DNS service for that. So just the piratebay relevant NS lookups should be resolved by TPBDNS and all others should be forwarded to other DNS services.

About when it would be offline, I thought everybody had not only a main server, but also some secondary ones.

But I guess downloading TOR would be easier indeed ... Anyway, thanks for the feedback Big Grin

It is correct that the TPB DNS servers wouldn't have to do the recursive lookups for non TPB host names, but they still have to forward the request and return the response in a timely manner.

Once a user manually reconfigurigures their DNS settings, it is on them to add a secondary address.

If it were possible to easily get a large majority of users to switch, then we'd probably take this route:

How about an out-of-band DNS?

We could make an addon that intercepts the URL, looks for "thepiratebay" and replaces it with the IP address (e.g. using onBeforeRequest in Chrome).
The IP address could be periodically updated (on demand or every hour) either by a special header field in the response headers of friendly sites when they are visited or by scraping certain sites like Suprbay or Reddit and others.

Any idiot now  knows how to install an addon.
