DHT/Magnet usage
#1
Hi all.

for those that don't know me I'm a researcher. In fact, I'm TorrentFreak's lead researcher, and right now I'm looking into the public perception of DHT and magnets.

So, I'm curious to hear peoples feedback on it, be it mainline or Azureus/Vuze's system, Do you use it, or do you have DHT disabled (and if so, why)

Stories, experiences, etc. I want to hear it all (and don't forget to include the client version you use as well)

And of course, if you have questions on DHT, I can probably address them too.

Thanks

As an Azureus/Vuze user, I find the handling of magnet links to be on par with traditional torrent files. DHT works great too, once the mlDHT plugin is added.

On the support end, I find the two largest problems here at SB and TPB are members with browsers that aren't properly configured to handle magnet links, (which they naturally blame on TPB) and people who don't have their firewalls configured to allow their torrent client to make outgoing UDP connections, which not only prevents DHT from working, but in the case of TPB, also prevents magnet links from working as TPB only includes UDP trackers in their magnet links.

I use transmission or utorrent. Torrents or magnets works flawllessly, no problems at all.
The user doesn't notice any difference, and that's the aim I think.
DHT is only disable by private trackers. It's a good example of how technology is limited by the need of control.
DHT allows a fully decentralized network, and that's the future.

OK the question is DHT/Magnet usage.

I use uTorrent 2.2.1 and hit the Magnet from EZTV, KAT, Torrenting and of course TPB.

I dont know what goes on in the background and I don't care not being rude I get in my car it works I dont care how it works or why number 2 injector squirts before number 1 it works or I spend money getting it fixed. Just the same with computers apart from when you buy a new PC thats it for about the next 4 years technology will overtake and as long as your backed up I don't bother getting PC replaced scrap it and get a new one works out cheaper in the long run.

There was a big hoo ha some time back saying Magnets were the only way forward and you had better get used to them sooner rather than later, so I got used to them. If theres a magnet needing my attention then it gets it.

I'm using µTorrent 2.2.1. but it won't show the content of the torrent in the window that pop up when you click on a magnet link, is that "normal" with this version?

Yes.  The ability to see and choose files wasn't added until a later version.

Using qBittorrent v3.2.0 Alpha, and even with previous stable releases, never had any problems with DHT and magnet links and I'm using them more often, initially there was an issue regarding the "unseen" content, but it has been solved in previous versions of qBittorrent, now it allows you to see the content of the magnet links.
