Okay then rather than attack you, I will school you.
When the title of a thread is something as inane as "Copyrights Should Be Illegal", posting in the thread without letting OP know that he/she is a fag is tantamount to accepting the idea presented in the thread as your own.
Copyrights protect content authors from the same deep-pocketed entertainment industry that plagues pirates everywhere.
Now, back to the personal attacks...

Ya, I didn't want to respond to this as the way the topic was laid out. I knew the OP was trying to say something, but had no idea what he was saying or how to say it.
The title "copyrights should be illegal" was really arguing the topic that "torrents should be legal." That would have made more sense. But, if OP knew what he was talking about, that's how he would have titled it. Without copyrights protecting the artist from theft by other artists and corporations, no one would want to create; like comedians stealing jokes and making money off others hard work. What's the sense?
I believe more often than not, it’s the greed of corporations enforcing the laws, to ensure they get every penny their contracts say they are entitled to. I don’t think they care as much about theft of work, which, in my opinion is the sole reason these laws should exist.
I’m making a guess that OP wouldn’t care about copyright laws if all of a sudden torrenting was legal. As long as he gets what he wants. You know those commie fucks. You can’t trust them as far as you can throw them.
I have a question for the OP: Would you agree to keep copyright laws as is insofar to the protection to artists’ part, as long as there were no penalties for downloading content without paying? I know copyrights are supposed to be inclusive to protect from losing their money too, but I don’t think that’s what you are getting at here.
To shorten this up: You just want to not get in trouble for getting your free shit…

I don't think he was bending over in any total direction.
He did say that he agreed that the artists should be compensated for their work, regardless of his other ideas.

How do you propose to protect them while allowing you to download for free?

I have no f-in clue (quote that). I was just trying to figure out where he was coming from. I also wrote "I know copyrights are supposed to be inclusive to protect from losing their money too, but I don’t think that’s what you are getting at here. " I guess I was speaking to the protection from plagiarism part. Who the fuck knows what I say half the time.
I guess change the laws so the corporations get less and the artists get more, so the hit is not as bad when we download.
Of course , we can always penis...

I don't believe that gestapo-like enforcement is the way to go, so in some respect, I agree with you.
Gestapo-like enforcement from the bodies you've mentioned above does, in part, drive the whole piracy scene. Nobody likes to be told you can learn to this level or watch or listen to this level. After that, you pay. That's Elitism.
Copyright absolutely should exist. It, in theory, acknowledges the origins of the source. There's been many examples of the source releasing their stuff, no matter what its' form for free on torrent sites and their NET intake has multiplied.
Big business like Adobe and AUTODESK are coming around to this way of thinking by knowingly allowing vulnerabilities in legacy software to continue into their latest releases.
As for people making a quick buck from "pirated" material. They're not pirates. They're thieves.

You are all idiots (especially wildcard for not stating his postition clearly). Copyright needs to exist for one reason. To protect what you create from someone else claiming it as their own. That's it.
Some of you said that, but weren't very clear I think. It's sole purpose is to show that you created the work, whatever it may be, and whatever you may choose to do with it after that is your own business.
It's not there to prevent companies from taking your royalties or the ability to sue pirates or anything else. Those actions are up to you. Pursue them if you wish, if you have something worth copyrighting that is. Which I seriously doubt anyone named 'Wildcard' does, but that is beside the point.
Also, 'Happy Birthday' is no longer under copyright.

True, but "Fuck Your Mother In The Ass With A Weedeater" is currently under seventy years of protection because I've just written it for you.

Care to show the lyrics?
Want to receive an advanced copy of that album, and, with it, send me a copyright of that to me as well.
