What are the best non Hollywood movies you can think of ? lets create this thread to help each other find good films that Hollywood didnt make . So tell us about British movies or any others that need subtitles
please give a link to the movie you mention either imdb or wikipedia

thanks

I will start with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downfall_(2004_film)  a good film about Hitlers last days ( unless he escaped to South America !! )

Are anime movies welcome?

If so, then I would submit Grave of the Fireflies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_of_the_Fireflies).

My submission comes from the fact that in war, the most that suffer are the civilians, and Grave of the Fireflies does well to spread that message.

And how apt that the 84th anniversary of the "Rape of Nanking" (1937) has just passed as well.

I recently watched "Leviathan" and can recommend it. It's very grim social realism with great writing (won best screenplay at cannes) and acting.

There are lots of gems in Russian(/soviet) cinema. My all time favorite scifi movie can be streamed in hd on youtube, - and the channel, "mosfilm" has a huge catalogue of feature movies from the soviet era and later.

If war movies is your thing, "Come and see" is arguably the most harrowing account of WWII war crimes. Also available on youtube.

From the German side (like "Untergang"), "Stalingrad" (1993!) and "Das Boot" need to be mentioned.

That's Werner Herzog directing Klaus Kinski. Two madmen working together almost killing each other in the process. You might wanna check out "Fitzcarraldo" too. Also, most of Herzog's output is good. Check out his documentaries as well. "Grizzly man" is on youtube

A/K/A the "Werner & Klaus Show" (ah, memories . . .) , all of which are worth a view.

One of my very favorite non-Hollywood films, and perhaps the greatest noir film ever made, is The Third Man .  Also made Anton Karas an international recording star.

Gareth Edwards sci-fi/Roadmovie Monsters is great. Budget was about 500.000£. He made the special effects on a laptop

Run Lola Run Another great movie from Germany

I submit new world. An undercover cop infiltrates a massive criminal organisation; probably the best attempt at that type of film.
