I recommend HP or Gateway

"Asus - 15.6" Laptop - 4GB Memory - 320GB Hard Drive - Black"

try ebay amazon or craigslist

buy a laptop with a AMD APU A8 or A10 series

I would recommend HP, Asus, Alien Ware, or Apple computers. I would suggest against getting a Dell computer

Well the laptop you should get all depends on how much you want to spend. Tongue

I own a ASUS UX51 and it is great. Non touch screen so it has an anti-glare coating and it is very slim and powerful. It cost me $1500 from memory express for the 256Gb model. Things like CS6, blender and some games run with ease, newer more graphic intensive games make it work very hard, and I don't like treating my precious compy that way Smile That being said I like ASUS a lot, they use good parts, they look good and I would buy one again.

Other brands I like:
-Apple (Great internals and quality, fantastic customer service but I am not a fan of OSX)
-Alienware (15inch model specifically, people will steal these if you're going to leave it unguarded)
-Dell XPS (not bad quality or price, but has it's share of problems)
-Samsung (good quality and slim)

Brands I would avoid:
- HP (Have a high failure rate , almost 25%, but that is an older statistic, they are also way overpriced with BEATS audio which is a scam)
- Acer (They are cheap, wonder why? Stay away)
- Lenovo (Is a hit or a miss unless you want to pay big money)

In general:
-AMD processors make a laptop cheaper but are outperformed by their respective intel models
-If you can get an anti-glare coating on the screen you'll be very happy
-All computers have slight problems, just like any car (mine has a squeaky caps lock now from me not being gentle) so consider what you are willing to live with

Good luck Smile

Are there any good laptops these days that will run GNU/Linux?

No particular reason, I just want it.

You can get anything to run linux, some come preinstalled. This is about as mainstream as you can get and have linux preinstalled http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/xps-13-linux/pd

Thanks.

Well, I just heard that some freak installed Secure Boot such that I can't run any OS I want in there.

You mean you got Windows 8 on your compy? Secureboot is standard, but can be disabled easily http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/170...-uefi.html

No, I didn't buy a laptop at all.

I was implying a what-if scenario.
