Anyone know how to flash firmwear on a hard drive?
#1
I've got a Toshiba SATA drive from an old laptop and I want to put it in different laptop. (The old laptop motherboard died)

The problem is that the drive has been configured to work ONLY with that particular laptop.

I'm able to access it through windows and I toasted the partitions and reformated the drive.

BUT when I go to use it as a primary drive and install a new OS... I get asked for a Master Password

Anyone have a solution ?

If you can try and plug the drive into a Windows 10/11 machine using an external dock and then use Diskpart in Dos in Admin mode and simply just use the Clean command to see if you can remove anything that might be unwanted..

You really need one of those things from ebay like an external dock so you can plug it using USB.  Diskpart is really good there's guides you can use you don't need to flash anything it's most likely something that's been put on the partition.  The Clean command should hopefully remove all traces of that and then just make a new partition and give it a quick format.

-Formatting has no effect on hard where password is on physical chip under hard drive on flash memory. Only specialized tools like Ultimatebootcd or similar software:

Searched 'unlock toshiba ata password'. Many hits.

These 2 look easy to execute.

(1) Victoria HDD

(2) Compu clinic Unlocker for Toshiba
Use the 30 day free trial option to get the job done.
Clicking on the green table cell takes you to the corresponding download page.

Already used diskpart via command line to clear all the partitions. Even used the override command.

I also used an external dock

Well I would try SectorVector's example, the 2nd one.  Looks like when looking into it more, that you require an unlock program to remove the password.  Sorry that I've got it wrong this time, I've never really had much dealings with Toshiba drives as normally I buy the other brands and certainly don't take them from Laptops much.  I don't think it's all that common the issue.  I'm sure an unlock program would work just fine.

I would say that these days, normally HDD's don't usually require an actual flashing of the drive but more with Solid State now where up to date firmware is required.  SSD firmware is very common but just watching out you don't damage an installation that something resides on.

It's a bit like unlocking a phone your problem and making it work on any network.  I've unlocked phones myself before years ago but found that the only way was to buy an unlock which cost me about £15 as all other ways didn't work but I'm sure this is different in regards to this issue.
