About that link--if I want accurate news without commentary, the last place I'd go for it is Torrent Freak. And true to form, their "article" is nothing more than their usual "boo-hoo, it's the end of the world" editorial without any more information than we can see on the site itself. It's what we used to call media tap-dancing, meaning that if you don't have any more information on an important story than the people who are watching/reading you, you repeat the very little which is evident to everybody over and over while giving old, obvious background so it appears you're actually doing news. When you aren't.

All this means we're still left without a clue about why ET so suddenly decided to lock the door and (presumably) throw away the key. I suppose we'll just have to wait for a member of staff to tell us, assuming they know why. But its useless to speculate without knowledge. I'm as curious as anyone, but I want facts.

As for what it means to me personally: *if* it's accurate, and ET's owner doesn't turn around and bring it back next week, it's a sad loss. I recognize three great public file sharing sites: KAT, TPB, and ET. Each has its quirks, but also a recognizable family and sense of commitment to what we're all about. Mind, I strongly suspect that another site will try to fill ET's shoes at some point soon. But I still have to take off my hat to ET and what it stood for.

This is like the bat signal. Someone, somewhere, is already working on a new and disruptive technology that will make the world as you know it obsolete.
Beware!

TPB and KAT: both solid, both public, neither asking you for private information, much less money. Besides, more sites are bound to pop up.

Or you could go the more specialized route, looking for sites that specialize--such as Mobilism, which is all about books. Or you could go the private route, with only a small number of new members at any given time. And usually enforced upload-download ratios.

In order to qualify for safe harbour protection, a service provider who hosts content must:
(1) have no knowledge of, or financial benefit from, infringing activity on its network;
(2) once provided with knowledge, act expeditiously to remove or disable access to the complained-of material;
(3) have a copyright policy and provide proper notification of that policy to its subscribers;
(4) list an agent to deal with copyright complaints.

Complying with requirements (2), (3), and (4) appears not enough for safe harbour if not mere mockery.
