It's cool to see such varied replies. I contributed to the first Kickstarter, was disappointed with season 11, but enjoyed most of the Gauntlet. The riffing is fine by me, but the host segments just don't make me laugh. My only anger at the new MST3K is that they misused Patton Oswalt. How could they have him there for two seasons and never get him to do anything funny?

Regarding the new episodes, I wonder if they'll pull another "Wizards of the Lost Kingdom" and ask RT to remove their "Shape of Things to Come" for a while. If you don't already have that RT, might be worth grabbing now to be safe!

I thought season 11 of MST ranks alongside seasons 4 and 5. In other words, alongside their best. Season 12 on the other hand is the very worst season they have EVER done. I don't know if Netflix made them riff newer movies or what the deal was, but it was the steepest drop in quality I have ever seen.
But I have donated and am optimistic about the next season. If the riffing is funny, the different voices do not bug me as much as I thought they would. I just really hope season 12 was an anomaly, as it was about as good as the KTMA season.

I watched the Time Bubble Tour last week in Kalamazoo. (The crowd was MUCH thinner than it was pre-pandemic when Joel toured through the college.) Emily was fine but I was not prepared for a female voice on Crow. Honestly, she was pretty good.. I just wish if we were gonna have 3 hosts with 2 robot sidekicks that those sidekicks were different bots to reflect those comedians' personalities. I'm sure there's a way to expand the story a little bit instead of feeling like a constant retread.

Or maybe I should just relax....

Season 11 "The Return" and Season 12 "The Gauntlet(sucks)" are both on Netflix and both have the same cast, incl Jonah.  Netflix seems to try to hide the far superior The Return and you have to click on The Gauntlet just to find the earlier season. No idea how it all worked financially, but I am sure somehow Netflix benefits more from Season 12 just based on how they've buried Season 11.
I thought the first half of Season 12 was great. But, as much as I loved lots of it, I thought The Christmas That Almost Wasn't and Carnival Magic were not so great. Once the season hit those 2 Wizards movies, I was kinda done. But Yongary, Beast of Hollow Mountain, Cry Wilderness, Land that Time Forgot, Avalanche... The whole first part of Season 11 I love.

hey thanks to you bsg4you for clarifying this. ok so yeah i've seen both seasons and i still feel both are funny! Jonah is a funny guy. it doesn't have the same vibe at all as the classic stuff but i enjoyed the films and the riffs. maybe my standards are just too low???!! lol

1) Part of the reason for the movie selection being so modern is because Joel's children dont like B&W movies. They refuse to watch them! And since Joel desperately wants to be popular amongst the kids, but is also completely out of touch with them - he thinks his own kids are the touchstone for younger audiences. Even though they clearly arent even into MST3K. This is why he has chosen to not do B&W movies anymore (or so he claims). Luckily for us - anaglyph 3D really works best in B&W, so here's hoping they do more of those!

2) Emily DOES have her own bots! (and the chemistry there seems better). And her acting (imho) seems much more sincere and believable than Jonah's hamfisted and stilted style of constantly winking to the camera. You can see it best when she reacts to the bots, it feels meore genuine instead of seeming competely staged. I couldnt really stand her when she first showed up on that puppet show thing, but I really liked her vibe during the kickstarter and the 2021 TDay spots. Here's hoping she gets a proper chance to prove herself. (We'll see, only time will tell).

3) After watching the live "watch-along" streams during the kickstarter and rewatching avalanche yesterday - I have discovered (for me) Jonah is the weak link. I like both the other actors that play crow and tom in s11 and s12 (even though I still have trouble telling which one is speaking w/o a visual cue).

4) No one can argue - the writing for the interstitial skits in the netflix seasons is GOD AWFUL. I thought the scifi seasons skits were bad, but these were terrible! (as evidensed by that bad Felicia/NPH song in Avalanche). I love Felicia and Patton - but they just didn't have any good material to work with.

5) I'm really hoping they go back to the old CONVERSATIONAL style of riffing (it was never broke - why did you try to fix it?). This seems to be agreed upon almost UNIVERSALLY. Again - I wonder who the f**ckin hell Joel was listening to - clearly he listened to someone that WASN'T a fan. (I can already hear them whining in my head "Why do they talk over the dialogue!? I can't follow what's happening in the movie! Wahhh!") Maybe it was a netflix executive's input, but I wouldnt be surprised if this hackneyed idea also came from listening to his kids or someone else that just doesn't get it.

5) All that said - I have higher hopes for this season's staff and writers and movie choices. Let's hope they can actually pull it off this time around!

PS - I wanted to like S11 and S12 MUCH MUCH MORE than I actually do - but damn there's some haters out there!! Interesting how the haters are almost always first to respond. It's the same way on youtube and imdb - the haters are consistently the first to drop comments and reviews. I get that there's plenty of valid reasons why you haven't liked the revival - but it's like y'all dont even want people to try. Which is odd since we've all seen how MKB, MJ&B, The Mads, and even others, have successfuly made succesful careers out of continued movie riffing.

I personally was not impressed with seasons 11 and 12.  I hoped that if they continued things would improve, but since it's being restarted again I'll have to reset my expectations.  I hope people enjoy the new stuff, and I'll check it out, but I don't think it will live up to what I want.
