I will reapplied it in a day or so wit the upgrade of final justice leveled.
I you research audio level standards... you will find that the entire audio industry has igrated to -14 LUFS a couple years ago.
its the official standard globally for streaming and all music production releases.
Video is -sort of the exception. movies -generally have a BIG dynamic range.
modern professional soundtracks they go from very quiet to very loud.
this -sort of buffers a maximum of around zero for the loudest portions. it isnt alway/mostly at the loudest.
Its -mostly dialogue.
Older and or less/no dynamic soundtracks from film and TV (most of the shit thats riffed)
was made before this concept and are -generally at a constant volume throughout.
Because most of this was viewed on TV speakers and because no one had a standard, the standard was 0
or all the way up, just before the red/clipping area.
This leveling isnt necessarily the gospel or a hard fast rule in terms of riffs but the application
of the international modern audio level standard (which IS now a hard, rule in professional audio production)
sounds better to my ears and the lack of having to constantly reach to turn every single video up or down
all fucking day and night is more than worth the 2-3 minutes it takes to correct the shituation IMHO.
i want my vids to run in the background without needing to adjust anything. Just as my music.
professional music players such as rekordbox and seratto employ auto gain to achieve this goal.
you can use auto gain on video if you know how but its always better to fix a problem at the source in my experience.
I was hesitant for a LONG time to mess with video levels, thinking it was sacred.
i also was considering the fact that 5.1n encoding through atmos requires you actualli import/adjust all the tracks
other wise you drop all that down to stereo. So, i only (for now) level stereo soundtracks that are obviously obnoxious.
Its also true that compression is overused and -generally not well understood. Some or all rifftraacks use some compression
That has an effect of actually artificially raising the volume -possibly above the clipping margin without actually clipping.
When that artificial level is then put at maximun of approx. 0, shit gets even worse and or potentially harsh.
the older and shittier the source soundtrack = more harshness to my ears.
All of this bullshit is actually a large part of why the -14LUFS standard was implemented internationally.
Everyone thought and to a certain extent were correct, that louder is better but shit got out of control across the board, especially in music.
on final justice upgrade the riff is at 0 (MAXIMUM ear splitting level) . the MST track is approx 1/2 that level. which is about in line with standards.
Jarring as fuck when switching tracks. hellen keller could tell you theres an issue there.
people watch rifftrax on phones and i pads and -in theory need more volume. Thats likely the logic of pushing the audio just short of the redline
if they used any logic at all. you will notice some official riffs are reasonable, some are hot as fuck. no consistency whatsoever.
Im an anal retentive, control freak, so....
I recently took all the 4k starwars upgrades and leveled then all. This was a fucking GODSEND miracle to me and to the folks who reviewed them
I then did the same to all the 4k upgraded sagas, transformers, twilight, harry potter ...
now i can drag 100 vids to elmedia player and go back to focusing on my actual work.
they can run for days or weeks and i NEVER have to stop working/loose focus on making money to adjust volumes on any of the riffs im listening to in the background.
It was like a bow and ribbon on the already awesome gifts i had and i have wanted to share that sort of work with folks here who
also want to enjoy the experience of the riffs without any sort of jarring effect and or constant fighting with the volumes.
No disrespect intended to the upgraders. i was making the same mistake myself for a year or so by leaving the "precious" levels as i found them.
Studio one now has a checkbox > normalise all audio @ -14lufs.
this is set it and forget it. Yet another reason i avoid all other daws unless i need something specific to that daw.
S-1 IMO runs circles around all the competing daws (tried them all) in most arras and will save a SHIT LOAD of time in general audio work.
because of this, now everything i output is ia a standardised audio level and plays well with all the others that are also normalized.
I can go from rifftrax to Sade to Slayer and EVERYTHING is standardized with no need to ever adjust volume unless i want to.
