Abortion outrage in Poland

In Poland, a draft law last month was proposed entitled, “Stop Abortion”, with the aim to outright criminalize abortion in the country. Currently, a woman can only get an abortion under three circumstances, rape, incest, or if there is a serious threat to the mother or baby’s life. The current anti-abortion law was introduced in 1993 by the fairly conservative parties of the country. Their goal is to ultimately outlaw abortion regardless of circumstances, and they’re closer than ever to ever reaching that vision.

The proposal requires 100,000 signatures in order for it to be debated by lawmakers and given a parliamentary vote. Given that Poland’s population is around 38 million people and that the majority of the population is Catholic (a rough estimate of 87 percent), it seems that there is going to be overwhelmingly support for the proposal. There are 30,000 names currently, and the number is expected to increase.

As you can imagine, many women are opposed to the “Stop Abortion” proposal. There have been numerous protests, with one recently being attended by over 9,000 people, (literally). The rebellion was truly ignited when the Prime Minister Beata Szydlo, personally stated that she would support the bill. Thousands against the proposal have taken to the streets of Warsaw, Poland’s capital, and even in front of the Polish Parliament.  

Many women have started to hang coat hangers on branches or ropes in place, which is a historic symbol of back-alley or self-induced abortions.

My thought on abortion

My thought on abortionSo now that we know the overall plot of the situation, I would like to give my opinion on the matter. Personally, I am not against abortion, as horrid as this sounds to some, I’d like to explain why.

First, we can’t absolutely assume that all anti-abortion supporters are against it just because of their religion. If we go ahead and take religion out of the equation, some are just going to think that it’s morally wrong. So, in that case, there is not going to be a middle ground, it’s either you support it, or you’re against it.  
I support abortion because of the fact that I believe that women have the right to do whatever they want with their bodies. My place on the political spectrum would be somewhere on the far-left, or just left in general. I strongly believe of the freedom of the both sexes.

A strong opposition of abortion in the modern world would have to be organized religion. Religion has its pros and its cons, it’s been keeping humanity behaved (partly) for the past few millenniums. The system that explains of what cannot be explained, the false hope of the oppressed creature, the opium of the masses, religion and the morals it brings helps shape humanity into something better. But this cannot be said justly in every case, no, to define of what is good or evil is an extremely powerful tool for the human mind. This is why so many are against it, I believe the majority of anti-abortion supporters are because of the fact that their religion tells them of what is good or evil.

In the context of the Pope, a powerful figure in the Catholic religion, any words/ideals/judgement shared by the Pope resonates with the majority of its adherents. If the Pope says that it’s bad, it’s bad.

And if we talk about other denominations of Christianity or even other Abrahamic religions such as Judaism or Islam, people are just going to follow the word of their closet leaders, priests, pastors, rabbi’s, Khalifahs. People are just going to be brainwashed into thinking of what is good or bad, it’s been like this for years and it’s most likely going to continue.

This doesn’t go to say that religion is bad, no, it’s good. You can abuse it just like any other substance, but just like them, it’ll just cloud your judgment. I don’t mean that abortion is absolutely right as some would disagree with me; I mean that in my opinion abortion should not be outlawed. The media and religion has a big role in determining in our sub-conscious (without us even knowing) that whatever we perceive to be “bad” is actually bad. So with that first though already implanted, it’s hard to detach from it, a sense of dependence, if you will, grows within us in what is good or evil.
So let’s go ahead and explain the cons of abortion. Yeah I know, it’s fucked up, killing babies and shit. But the thing is, worse acts of “wow, that’s fucked up” occur in our daily lives without us even knowing it. The following only applies to people living in the United States as I don’t know if all or some of these issues even exist in other countries, (I hope not).

The Republicans (the conservative guys in the US), with all their strict obsession of the bible and righteousness, disagree with the concept of abortion, primarily because it conflicts in whatever they believe is just. Yet, they still allow more tax breaks for those earning more than $250,000 a year (rich people), they generally oppose homosexuality despise the Bible stating that you’re supposed to love everyone, they refuse to impose more regulations against Wall Street, which practically controls our economy and our jobs, and they refuse to do anything to fight the pharmacy industry which just sells death to people for money. They also don’t believe in global warming and they refuse to do anything about alternative resources, which is going to be a concern when they ran out of oil to dig or buy, and not to mention, they pretty much like the death penalty. So, how can these guys be against abortion, while they’re acts can be considered as “not for the best of humanity” or in this case, the people of the nation.

To me, it’s just hypocrisy at its best, and if it helps in any case, abortion doesn’t necessarily have to happen when the fetus has been formed; you can do it way before that and even then, your mind should be less “guilty”.

Overall, the cons of abortion include having a guilty conscious and being a hypocrite in some cases.

Let’s get on with the pros of abortion.

So one may ask how can there be pros with abortion. Well let’s start off by talking about stem cells. Stem cells in its basic understanding, are cells that can adapt with others around it, they’re blank cells basically. They can be used to replace other cells wherever they’re missing and they can be manipulated to help fight against aggressive diseases such as aids or cancer. This is barely a still-new field in the medical world, but some people agree that eventually ground breaking cures are probable with stem cells and they would do anything to get that chance. So how do people get stem cells? Well they get them from the dead corpses of fetuses, fucked up, I know.

So if we go ahead and do the math, if millions of people die of aids/cancer every year, and we go ahead and use the stem cells of aborted fetuses and the one millionth fetus led to a cure for said diseases, wouldn’t it had been worth it? This doesn’t mean that we should just keep aborting babies just for medical research, but if the mother wishes to abort the baby, I think we shouldn’t let the baby die for nothing, donating the fetus for science would be the best outcome.

Another pro of abortions is maintaining the population of an area. If there too many children, people are going to work overtime to support their children, which leads to stress, which could lead to a heart attack leaving the children to fend for themselves, and this situation is worse if you live in a third world country.

Overall, I support abortion, but I also highly support the concept of adoption. Who knows, maybe that fetus could be the next Einstein or some shit.

(I don't expect anyone to counter my arguments, or at least I hope no one does.)

I'm sorry, but I don't agree.

I can sympathise with a woman that was raped by a lowlife, but if you exterminate a being before he/she can have a chance to contribute just because a beast touched the woman the wrong way, you're no better than the beast that started the thing. In fact, it's guilty until proven innocent.

I mean, how can you judge that the fetus will follow the footsteps of a criminal just because he was a product of him? Do you have a crystal ball? You're not God, so you can't pass judgement on someone who hasn't even done anything to anyone.

I know the risks that this new life can violate the law once again, just like his/her father/mother/whatever, but if he does that, then judge him. It may be "too late," but at least the person was given a chance to avenge a wrongdoing. This process, however risky, is the way that a good society requires to remain a good society, or one that has fair laws: innocent until proven guilty.

Again, I apologise for the fact that we don't see eye-to-eye for that.

Well first, it's not technically a being if you were to get an abortion early. You can get one as early as 2-3 weeks of pregnancy, nothing has formed, there is no heart, brain, other organs, just a bunch of cells. It's generally accepted that after 24 weeks of pregnancy, the fetus has developed a human mind, the conscious. So if you were to abort it before that phase, you're good.

Secondly, don't know where you got that from, I don't remember typing about the offspring following the father in the life of crime. That argument is just incomprehensibly stupid, of course you can't judge how a person is going to be just by based off the actions of the parent(s). There is no god, (note how I capitalized religious references for out of respect), and you can argue with me back and forth whether one or several exist, but how could such an being with omnibenevolence allow such a thing? Especially an Abrahamic god, aren't they supposed to be the all-good supreme being that of which can only create good and only the highest standard of that goodness? And yes, you can go ahead and counter me by talking about free will, but that's just another religious counter-measure to counter the problem of evil.

The problem is NOT that the new life will act criminally, the problem is how that child grow up. I've seen it a lot, parent(s) who are junkies/drunks, young teens with their future ruined under the premise of a baby being catered to 24/7, living in dangerous neighborhoods, being abused be it physically sexually or emotionally, being abandoned, being forced into foster care and being separated from their siblings, crack baby, and these are just some of the problems in the average first-world country. In third-world countries, you got aids, HIV positive, carrying an STD, being born in a combat zone only to have a mortar round collapse the ceiling burying your mum and you, cartels/gangs, human trafficking, forced into being a sex slave, or just the occasional terrorist bombing that everyone sees from time to time.

Do you honestly believe that just because a female were to get pregnant, intentional or accidental, rape or consensual, that she does not have the right to an abortion? Even with nothing having been formed inside her? A bunch of cells?

To me, a good society is one that allows the freedom of abortion to women who cannot financially support a baby, doesn't want a baby, or just doesn't want to put the life in misery. Don't forget that I highly support adoption, I believe that the concept should be consulted with the mother and if she doesn't agree with it, then abort.

And no, a good society does not let the killing of a life by anyone's discretion. Maybe you can apply that adoption idea. By then, the care of the baby will be out of the hands of the mother.
