AI upscaling?
#1
Anyone here heard of or seen copies of Classic MST3Ks that have been upscaled using one of the newer AI upscaling software packages out there?  I just got a demo of Topaz Video AI and I'm trying it out on MST517 "The Beginning of the End".  I've got the entire series of VHS based torrent from years ago... all episodes including KTMA (at least what it had) and I'll try it out on the black and white movie first.  Anyway, let me know if anyone out there has a large archive that this has already been done to.  Thanks!

I'm not sure how much has changed since the beta, but it was a terrible and inefficient program.
You really need a serious rig to get a file that size to take less than a few days. We're talking about an hour to do 2 minutes of video with a fairly decent setup.
Most studios would find the software useless.
However, if you wanna give it a try, go for it. Just don't expect too much.

idk about those videos but my Firestick does all streaming in DolbyVision and my Shield has an AI-Enhancer feature ... i will have to check out some episodes and see if there's a difference.

There is a nice change, especially at first glance. The hair curl in Frank's forehead. The creases in Dr Forrester's coat.

Allow me to present the worsening. Dr Forrester's forehead now has a five o'clock shadow. The bell shape of the yellow lamp has gone from smooth to corrugated lines of bright and dark yellow.
All of these extra things that did not exist in the studio when they were filming, and do not exist in the source files, are known as artifacts. They are the mistakes of the AI algorithm.
I would guess that the clean blurry image of the studio is a 'best case' situation, too. The poor film quality of most of the MST3K movies would come out distractingly icky, like Clayton's stubbly forehead. Those artifacts are more visible when you're watching a movie (vs. looking at a still frame).

These shows were created to be watched on CRT screens. We're already seeing a sharper picture than tv viewers did on the show's first run. Getting a computer to guess at the original image is not going to work. Might be easier to get a computer to tell us the future.

Even with the worsening (lol great wording, btw) I'd like to see at least one episode get this treatment. Could have some odd side-effects that makes the movie even more weird! Had a good laugh at Dr Forrester's forehead stubble.

Keep us posted, Hum-da-dee!

Your starting source material is pretty terrible (from the filename it's an xvid encode which means this was created 10+ years ago) - remember to always start with the best source possible for any encode, which is the DVD's themselves. I do like the idea overall though.
