³º Megadeth have always been an odd band for me, º ³
³º and more than a bit of a mixed bag. This was the º ³
³º first album I heard by them, from samples on º ³
³º iTunes, and I'll fully admit this right from the º ³
³º bat: When I first listened to those samples, I º ³
³º thought they were a joke band. º ³
³º º ³
³º Blasphemy? Perhaps, but only to absurdly º ³
³º obsessive elitist faggots. Or, to be more º ³
³º precise (and fairer), I don't really believe in º ³
³º blasphemy; Metal has no sacred cows. Well, it º ³
³º does, but I couldn't care less, and so to me, º ³
³º they don't exist. A feeling that Megadeth's º ³
³º music, their lyrics, and their vocalist are all º ³
³º a big joke is no more an insult than the º ³
³º overstated (and ridiculously obvious) º ³
³º observations of some metalheads that Metallica º ³
³º have meant nothing since the Black Album. As if, º ³
³º and that's the irony - a lot of those people are º ³
³º simply jealous and angry of Metallica's stunning º ³
³º success in becoming full blown rock stars. Sure º ³
³º they'll deny it, but if you look deep enough, º ³
³º it's there. º ³
³º º ³
³º Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that º ³
³º whether I believed Megadeth's music was a joke º ³
³º or not at the time was purely arbitrary. Anthrax º ³
³º was often jokey, did that make early classics º ³
³º like Among the Living and Spreading the Disease º ³
³º lame? No. Of course, Megadeth's music isn't a º ³
³º joke, and never has been; putting aside Peace º ³
³º Sells's value as a sacred cow (whether or not to º ³
³º be slaughtered), I fully admit to simply having º ³
³º been ignorant when I first heard the album. Wake º ³
³º Up Dead was, to me, very odd, yet not jokey - º ³
³º just odd. The Conjuring sounded a little like a º ³
³º silly attempt at being evil that, in comparison º ³
³º to Slayer, just didn't work. (I still hold this º ³
³º opinion to this day - more on that later) And º ³
³º the title track? Yeah, that one was an oddball. º ³
³º It was this song, with its not all that heavy º ³
³º riffs and its seemingly jokey vibe, that made me º ³
³º think of Megadeth as a joke band for a while. º ³
³º That was, until I realised the lyrics, despite º ³
³º being sarcastic and snarky, were meant to be º ³
³º taken seriously - I had thought of them as a º ³
³º joke because I'd never heard anything like that º ³
³º in metal before. Previously, it was all either º ³
³º depressing doom metal, brutal thrash, vicious º ³
³º death metal, evil and often raw black metal, or º ³
³º classic metal that I thought of at the time as º ³
³º hard rock (that's for another time). Megadeth º ³
³º were thrash, and they were faster than º ³
³º Metallica, but they weren't brutal like Slayer. º ³
³º They were...well, different. º ³
³º º ³
³º Some point later, I listened to Rust In Peace, º ³
³º and this...well, again, it was odd. Holy Wars º ³
³º worked for me, but the rest of the album didn't. º ³
³º Again, I had trouble connecting with Megadeth. º ³
³º º ³
³º Finally, I went back to this album, and this º ³
³º time listened to the songs properly. º ³
³º º ³
³º My opinion changed entirely. º ³
³º º ³
³º Put basically, no matter what you may think of º ³
³º him as a vocalist, Dave Mustaine is, in my º ³
³º opinion as well as that of many others, a º ³
³º somewhat twisted, yet definite genius of a man. º ³
³º In fact, a twisted genius may be the best way to º ³
³º describe him, on this album especially, which is º ³
³º crammed full of crazy yet workable ideas that º ³
³º all come together as one to form a classic º ³
³º thrash album. Yet, this isn't typical thrash at º ³
³º all...nothing on the album is. It's all unusual, º ³
³º very unique, in that way that simply stands out, º ³
³º and like so many others places Megadeth amongst º ³
³º the top metal acts of all time as much because º ³
³º of that uniqueness as anything else, if not º ³
³º more. º ³
³º º ³
³º Wake Up Dead exemplifies this in so many ways. º ³
³º The drum and bass only intro that explodes º ³
³º into...well, odd riffage, with Dave's very odd º ³
³º and, here, very low vocals. Almost like he's º ³
³º whispering, or talking drunkenly. Then this º ³
³º crazy solo kicks in, all the while tempo changes º ³
³º galore have already begun...and we haven't even º ³
³º reached the first memorable riff yet. That's º ³
³º just coming up. As the solo fades out, a new º ³
³º riff begins, eventually shifting into that º ³
³º crushing thrash riff that makes use of º ³
³º Mustaine's unique "Spider Chord" style of guitar º ³
³º playing. It repeats four times, then the ending º ³
³º is altered with more Spider Chords...then comes º ³
³º another tempo change, into something even º ³
³º faster, with another crazy solo played over some º ³
³º riffs that sound like they're in the pentatonic º ³
³º scale, except so fast that it's hard to be º ³
³º absolutely sure. Then the song speeds up even º ³
³º more into truly crushing, windmill worthy º ³
³º speeds, with yet more new riffs, now played º ³
³º atonally! Then a somewhat memorable riff kicks º ³
³º in again under Dave's now more prevalent and º ³
³º obvious vocals...and we see that the song is º ³
³º about being found out by your girlfriend after º ³
³º cheating on her. A joke? Not really, as the º ³
³º song's structure indicates. It's odd, frenetic, º ³
³º even disturbing more than funny. º ³
³º º ³
³º Suddenly it all stops. Then a crushing drumbeat º ³
³º signals the arrival of a new riff - an angry, º ³
³º vicious, slower riff. A few moments later one of º ³
³º the album's greatest solos begins. This is a º ³
³º real killer, a dark harmonic minor scaled solo º ³
³º with a somewhat middle-eastern vibe, but whose º ³
³º real purpose is to sound tense, angry, º ³
³º aggressive, even deathly. The speed and ability º ³
³º of Dave as a guitar player is really pushed to º ³
³º the forefront here. As the solo fades, cries of º ³
³º "WAKE UP DEEEEAAAD!" ring out over the º ³
³º continuing riffage. Finally, after this repeats º ³
³º a couple of times, the song ends with a final, º ³
³º almost forlorn "Wake up dead!". º ³
³º º ³
³º And all of that, ladies and gentlemen, happened º ³
³º in less than four minutes. º ³
³º º ³
³º That's Mustaine for ya. Crazy, fucked up on º ³
³º drugs, booze, and chicks, but oh so clever in º ³
³º his own warped manner. º ³
³º º ³
³º The rest of the album is a similarly bizarre, º ³
³º sometimes schizophrenic affair, with a mixture º ³
³º of slower, sometimes more "normal" songs, mixed º ³
³º with some insanely fast numbers. "The Conjuring" º ³
³º has an intro that tries too hard to be sinister º ³
³º and, in comparison to Slayer, simply doesn't º ³
³º work (this keeping in mind that Hell Awaits was º ³
³º released a year before this album, too). º ³
³º However, once it speeds up, this song is a great º ³
³º thrasher, again with tempo changes, crushing º ³
³º riffs, and crazy solos galore. º ³
³º The title track is absurdly simple, far simpler º ³
³º than almost anything Metallica was doing at the º ³
³º same time, yet it works. Unlike Metallica, Dave º ³
³º didn't have this hypocritical view of being º ³
³º above MTV. He used it, and it worked. º ³
³º Ironically, he was still less popular than º ³
³º Metallica was even before they released the º ³
³º Black Album. In another silly irony, Metallica º ³
³º changed their tune entirely when they released a º ³
³º music video for "One", then just decided "fuck º ³
³º it" and released the Black Album. I don't hold º ³
³º anything against them for doing that, and in º ³
³º many ways it may simply have been a natural º ³
³º progression. But if they had been less overly º ³
³º anti MTV and anti-commercial from the start, º ³
³º they would probably have got a lot less º ³
³º criticism when they changed, since they wouldn't º ³
³º have been hypocrites. º ³
³º º ³
³º Anyway, moving on. The point I was trying to º ³
³º make was that Dave didn't care about whether º ³
³º being on MTV made him a sellout or not - he just º ³
³º did it. And yes, Peace Sells is a fairly º ³
³º accessible song by thrash standards. Still, it º ³
³º works, and his snarky, sarcastic delivery is º ³
³º part of that charm. Without it, the song just º ³
³º wouldn't be the same. Once I got used to it, I º ³
³º grew to quite enjoy the song. Not as much as º ³
³º many of the others on the album, but it's still º ³
³º great in its own way. Whether it's a metal º ³
³º classic or not is indisputable, but to me, it's º ³
³º never been more than very good. The lyrics are º ³
³º the best part, both in that they are about being º ³
³º a metalhead (to a point) and just as a general º ³
³º "fuck the system, I'll do as I please" song in º ³
³º favour of individual choice, which is very much º ³
³º a metal thing. º ³
³º º ³
³º "Devil's Island" is a very straightforward º ³
³º thrasher, probably more straightforward than any º ³
³º other song on the album in fact. It starts off º ³
³º slow and crushing, has a tiny bass interlude, º ³
³º then becomes a speedy crusher. It's a decent º ³
³º song, yet not much more. For this reason, I have º ³
³º to place it as amongst my least favourite songs º ³
³º on this album (along with the Willie Dixon º ³
³º cover). It's not bad, just very ordinary, which º ³
³º by Megadeth standards is a bit of a bummer. º ³
³º º ³
³º Now we come to one of this album's true º ³
³º masterpieces. Good Mourning...Black Friday is º ³
³º one of the heaviest, darkest, most aggressive, º ³
³º ugly, nasty, vicious, and fucked up thrash songs º ³
³º not in the category of brutal thrash that you'll º ³
³º find anywhere. By Megadeth standards this is º ³
³º pure evil. Sure it's not that nasty compared to º ³
³º Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Dark Angel, º ³
³º Sepultura, etc, but those all come under the º ³
³º umbrella of brutal thrash, which Megadeth does º ³
³º not. As such, this song is extremely dark and a º ³
³º really vicious thrasher, probably one of the º ³
³º most extreme songs Dave ever wrote. º ³
³º º ³
³º It begins ever so slowly, calmly, yet in a º ³
³º sinister way, with a doomy, gloomy vibe suited º ³
³º to a song about a crazed serial killer. The solo º ³
³º here is phenomenal; filled with emotion, bluesy, º ³
³º and dark as fuck, and it just plain works. º ³
³º Continuing over the clean, creepy intro riffs, º ³
³º the song then explodes into heaviness around the º ³
³º 1 minute mark, with the clean guitars overtaken º ³
³º by the distorted ones. The solo then disappears, º ³
³º to be replaced by more clean riffs, except by º ³
³º this point, they are building up and up, tension º ³
³º mounting, reaching a deeper and deeper level, º ³
³º while Dave's vocals appear, now properly after º ³
³º his brief "Good Mourning" exclamation earlier. º ³
³º "Hey, I don't feel so good...something's not º ³
³º right...something's coming over me...what the º ³
³º fuck is this...?" Boom! That pick slide, and the º ³
³º guitars explode along with Dave! º ³
³º "WHHHOOOOOOAAAAAA!" DUN, DUN, DUN, DUN DUN - DUN º ³
³º DUN DUN, DUN, DUNNNNN...it goes on and on. º ³
³º º ³
³º Then it changes. Very abruptly. Screaming º ³
³º riffage kicks in, along with a new solo, before º ³
³º it all stops again. Then a new riff begins. Some º ³
³º of the most crushing speeds yet heard on the º ³
³º album now can be heard in earnest, along with a º ³
³º crazed performance by Dave. The song stays this º ³
³º way until the end, a maelstrom of madness suited º ³
³º to a twisted, killer looney. Something's not º ³
³º right, indeed. º ³
³º º ³
³º "Bad Omen" is another very dark number, but º ³
³º rather more 'normal' when compared to its º ³
³º predecessor. After a sinister intro, it gets º ³
³º heavy, with some odd sounding pick slides that º ³
³º work very well. Afterwards it's just a º ³
³º straightforward thrasher, but a hell of a lot º ³
³º better overall than "Devil's Island". º ³
³º º ³
³º Now the cover. I'm sorry, but covers of this º ³
³º nature have never really appealed to me, and I'm º ³
³º rather grateful that this stopped following So º ³
³º Far, So Good, So What. I mean, a blues cover on º ³
³º a thrash album? Yes, I know that without blues º ³
³º there would be no rock, thus no hard rock, thus º ³
³º no metal, and thus no thrash...but still, this º ³
³º just doesn't really work. It comes across as º ³
³º very light and silly. º ³
³º º ³
³º Thankfully, one cannot say the same about the º ³
³º very last song here, which is a masterwork in º ³
³º almost every way. "My Last Words" opens with a º ³
³º somewhat sinister clean guitar intro, before the º ³
³º distortion kicks in, but without drums, so no º ³
³º actual heaviness...yet. Then the song gets very º ³
³º bluesy, but heavy and fast as fuck. Very much º ³
³º like speed metal here, as much as thrash if not º ³
³º more, but that doesn't matter - Megadeth's º ³
³º unique character has always made them standout, º ³
³º usually in a good way, and this is no exception. º ³
³º Well, the riffs are a little repetitive, I'll º ³
³º admit. I wish it wasn't just the same two riffs º ³
³º repeated ad nauseam for over two minutes. In º ³
³º fact, this is a rather annoying point that could º ³
³º have easily been averted - Dave has more than º ³
³º enough writing ability to have come up with a º ³
³º new riff. Unfortunately he doesn't, not until º ³
³º about 3.10 into the song, at which point º ³
³º everything changes. A vicious (I've really º ³
³º overused that word on this review) speed metal º ³
³º riff kicks in, and the song gets really FUCKING º ³
³º FAST. Seriously. This cross into something º ³
³º almost insane is what makes the song so special. º ³
³º The solo is also phenomenal here, with tons of º ³
³º melody, a few arpeggios, and a great vibe. º ³
³º Finally, the song closes with the same riffs and º ³
³º Dave screaming: "You! Come on! Next victim! º ³
³º Your...turn to DIE!". The only silly part is º ³
³º that the song is about Russian Roulette, which º ³
³º is a game usually played by choice. º ³
³º Nevertheless, what a closer. º ³
³º º ³
³º So yeah. This album is a masterpiece in almost º ³
³º every way, with a couple of weaker moments. º ³
³º You've got killer songs (pardon the pun) like º ³
³º Wake Up Dead, Good Mourning, and My Last Words. º ³
³º You've got great songs in The Conjuring and Bad º ³
³º Omen. You've got a good song in the title track. º ³
³º And you've got an average song in Devil's º ³
³º Island, plus a barely average cover of Willie º ³
³º Dixon's "I Ain't Superstitious". º ³
³º º ³
³º I've added this up to around 90. The album is º ³
³º great, hugely influential, and some parts of it º ³
³º are masterful. Suffice it to say, looking past º ³
³º the weaker elements that are still here, if you º ³
³º are a fan of thrash, or any metal at all, this º ³
³º is an album you cannot do without. Sure it's got º ³
³º some bad spots, and some rough edges here and º ³
³º there (remember, Megadeth at this point were º ³
³º still a fairly young band - Mustaine's genius º ³
³º aside, they were youthful and in some ways even º ³
³º inexperienced - something that would change º ³
³º drastically by Rust in Peace), but that's part º ³
³º of the charm. That wild abandon, sheer madness º ³
³º in places worthy only of a heavy metal musician. º ³
³º At the end of the day, Peace Sells, for all its º ³
³º flaws, is a winner. º ³
