I was a fan of uTorrent and I am experienced the same difficulties. I have tried every suggestion and am frankly fed up. utorrent simply does not obey any preferences settings.
Switch to qBittorrent - www.qbittorrent.org it's just fantastic and reminds you of the good old days of utorrent.
