thanks for all the replies here. I finally got it working.
I'm running rtorrent-0.8.6-4.el6.x86_64 on a centos 6 64 bit server, it's all command line only.
I tried the instructions here: https://harbhag.wordpress.com/2010/06/30...ike-a-pro/ and I also changed the magnet link conversion method I was using and rtiorrent is now downloading. I don't know which solution worked but it's working now.
