Israeli gunboats targeted on Monday evening Palestinian fishermen and their boats near the beleaguered Gaza Strip's northern coast.

During their presence off the coast of the al-Sudaniya neighborhood in northern Gaza, Israeli gunboats launched machine-gun fire at fishing boats, according to local sources.

In an attempt to suffocate the fishermen's boats, the navy forces used water cannons.

The Israeli navy attack, which forced the fishermen to return ashore, fortunately caused no injuries.

Almost every day, Israeli naval forces and gunboats harass Gaza fishermen, firing at them, destroying their boats, and making arrests. During firearm attacks, fisherman are sometimes hurt or killed.

Palestinian fishermen are allowed to fish up to 20 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza under the 1993 Oslo Accords, but Israel has gradually reduced the fishing area to between six and three nautical miles as part of its siege on Gaza.

Fishermen and human rights organizations claim that the Israeli occupation has been regularly enforcing a limit even closer to the shore since the 2008-09 Gaza war.
