Yo, 

Im using the free version of Malware bytes. Recently downloaded a film that didn't work, so was worried it was a virus or something. Did a scan and nothing came up. Deleted the file etc. Since then I have been having scam calls all of a sudden, that seems rather targeted. For instance, I had a call from my bank that said a large amount of money had been spent on Amazon and to stop it going through press 1. They said the right bank name and I had been on Amazon only a half hour before. Been quite a few like that in the last few days. I logged into my insurance account and then get a call about insurance etc. Been checking the numbers on https://scam-numbers.co.uk/ and they are defo scammers. But it certainly seems almost like someone is watching what I do on my laptop then trying to scam me. Did lots of scans, nothings coming up, malware bytes is usually really good. 
SO has anyone got a better suggestion for antivirus? And a decent website to download films from please?

Just make sure that you've got call screening on your phone and if a dodgy number comes up when it rings then just don't even answer the phone.  Only answer the phone when it's a number with recognised area codes.

built in windows defender in windows 10 is enough for me.

The Pirate Bay https://thepiratebay.org/top/207 have a lot of VIP/trusted uploaders wich regulary upload movies.
about your recently downloaded film that didn't work, it maybe because your video player. but first you must make sure that what is your downloaded is real video file. it must have extesion *.mp4, *mkv, *.avi, or some other popular video files. then you will need install K-Lite Codec Pack Mega or VLC for "trouble-free" playing your film/movies.

If it has a .lnk it is definitely a booger.

As stated always check the history and reputation of uploaders.

Antivirus is garbage, only to be used on *old* files.

All new boogers past script kiddie quality are first screened against ALL KNOWN antivirus programs, on sites like Virustotal. Some take years to catch, some are *never* caught.

The only security in Windows is knowledge and experience, and dealing with the vectors such as email, websites, and torrents. Until you know to disable services, run a sandbox, and arm your browsers to the teeth (and turn HTML off in email) - it is best to stick with downloading stuff older than 6 months. The average time for detection, for the cheap boogers at least. A real good one can cost $20,000. NSA quality.

Be aware that the korporations are targeting warez, and will flag simple keygens. But some keygens WILL be nasties.

Advice: google the info on system restore, and hope you had it turned on.

there are lot of anti-viruses, but no system is safe.

The lil lady caught a weird booger the other day. It set the main internet connection to 'proxy' so no browser could make a connection.
Used HiJackThis and found a bit of cruft, wiped it, and hasnt come back.

This was from perusing 'normal' shopping sites.

Some thoughts:
Google ERUNT, and preferably install it to run at boot. System Restore is great but some boogers will disable it.
This will make a complete copy of the registry, and restore it to any previous copy .

Also HiJackThis: But rename the exe as some boogers will attack that too. It is quite good, but requires a bit of a learning curve. Namely, learning what is *normal* and then being able to spot differences. It malkes logs, which help in the process.

Google BlackViper, and get an idea of what to TURN OFF. With enough crap disabled the boogers simply cannot phone home. Plus it will greatly speed up the system.

And... Use a good file manager (Far, TotalCommander, etc) and symlink all the %temp% dirs to C:\Temp, and periodically wipe it. The boogers love hiding in the users local temp dir. Best to wipe from a Linux Live DVD to get the difficult ones.
