torrent security

So basically all my friends say that i would be extremely stupid if i would use piratebay because "it uses torrents and that´s super insecure" they are like "dude, if you download something via torrent the police will kick your door in 100%"

So how safe/unsafe is downloading something here actually. I read that most people get noticed but the police does not care. This would not be enough for me tho...

Your friends could use a little more education. I would say bittorrent is more secure than downloading from a web site because once you leave the swarm there is no record of you having participated, whereas if you download from a web site there is almost certainly going to be a record of your visit.

Either way, the police never care because copyright infringement is a civil matter. They don't know what you are downloading, and they are not trying to find out.

Now if you started your own torrent site that happened to index many popular copyrighted works, you might get the attention of the police, but that is very different that simply downloading using bittorrent.
