[split] Burning movies to DVD

Thanks for the quick reply. I am a bit confused here. Some of the movies said that it is 1080p brrip and the format is it avi format, can I burn this straight away with a dvd burner or must I convert them first?

Am not sure what you are trying to do. Following reply is based on my understanding.

Let's say the video file you are trying to 'copy' to the DVD is Killing.Season.2013.1080p.avi and the file size is 1 GB.
It is a just a video file of a certain resolution (1080p), encoded using some compression method ( say MPEG4).
The source was perhaps a Blu-ray or a WEB-DL (downloaded from a web source like iTunes). But now it is a video file.

To copy it to a DVD and play it on a DVD player it needs to be 'converted' to DVD format. A tool like ConvertXtoDVD (or similar DVD authoring tools) should do it. It converts the video to DVD format and burns it to the DVD so that it is readily playable on a DVD player.

However if the video file size is larger (say 2 GB ?) , it may not be possible for the authoring tool to convert into DVD format.
In such a case, you could then simply copy the video file as data to the DVD. A DVD player will not be able to play it as it does not recognize the file. But you should be able to play it on a Computer. This method may be used as a way of backing up files.

So you can 'burn' it to your DVD, depending on your needs.

Can I convert this to dvd format and then burn it with a dvd burner? You said that the program convertxtodvd would work well?

You can convert ANY movie to video DVD format and burn it with a DVD Burner.

But whether it is a good idea is a completely different question that should be addressed first.

Why do you want to burn a physical video DVD?

There are multiple very good reasons not to do that. You will almost certainly be better off doing something else.

What is the best way to backup a movie? I thought that most videos have to be converted into a dvd format first before burning it on a dvd? I got DVDFab 9 but am not sure if that is the best program to burn any torrent into a dvd format, which can be played on a standard player?

"Best" is a subjective term.

Personally, I never bother backing up movies I've downloaded--if I ever lose the copy I have on my hard drive AND need it again, I can just download it again.

Converting a file to Video DVD format takes finding, downloading and installing, and learning how to use a program like DVDFab. Then, every single movie has to be converted--which takes time and effort on your part AND reduces the quality. And a stack of blank DVD's which then becomes a stack of burnt DVD's.

Alternatively you could simply copy the file (as is) to an external hard drive. That takes no extra software, a single drag-and-drop mouse operation, a few seconds, and preserves the quality.

External hard drives are comparable in cost to blank DVDs (in fact these days they're mostly cheaper on a $/byte basis). They will last longer, take up less space, be more portable and vastly more convenient.

As for playing back, most-if-not-all "standard" DVD players purchased in the past 5 years will have a USB port and be able to play AVI and MP4 files (at least). If your player doesn't, then buy a new one--even a $30 machine will do. [Though DVD players are obsolete at this point. Laptops, games boxes, media players, smart phones, smart TVs etc. can all be used to play back files on TV screen.]

My apologies for posting in the wrong section. Just to clarify, if i download any movies that says "brrip", then I must convert it to dvd format. It would be better to download DVDrip instead and then I can burn it directly onto a dvd disc? I have tried burning it with DVDfab and correct me if I am wrong, the only way to do this is to use the DVD creator section but how would I get this VOB file to play with Vlc player? When I play this on my pc, it just loops through the menu and doesn't play the actual movie...

Got it all wrong; BRRip simply means its source is a Blu-Ray disc. Heck, you can burn it on a VCD if you want, albeit you would need to split it in three chunks to fit on three CD-Rs if you want to do that, but that's another story.

No matter what rip it is, you can do whatever you want with it.

If you want to burn on DVD, just use ConvertXtoDVD. You can feed any file to it and it will burn to a DVD for your TV, if you want of course.
