aggressive window-generating ads
#1
I've treasured TPB forever, and depend on it to host torrents I want to share.

My browser's ad-blocker crashed this morning, and I got a shocking view of why many people tell me they won't use TPB.

The TPB site generated a large number of pop-up windows; it looked like Chrome was closing them almost as fast as they were generating, as I say them open and close repetitively.

Wouldn't regular ads generate sufficient income? Wouldn't more people be willing to use, and not ad-block the site, if the ads weren't so violent?

Could TPB, like some sites do, charge people a fee to free them from ads?

For those not paying attention, twocows' reply was this first line of the text quoted in his reply.

I made no mistake; I am 100% happy with the Chrome browser and TPB on my desktop, which is what 70% of desktop users use.

Your reply to my concern that TPB is alienating it's userbase was senseless. As great as TPB is, it does not get to tell the Internet's users what web browswer to use.

I remember your username, but I can't exactly recall what I wrote to you last time; if if you wrote something like this last time, I'm going to guess it was something like that: even one cow could have done better.

Hey coyote,

I know you, I used to talk to you many many years ago.  It's me Pov, you used to hang with the old crew down at DJNap.  That's a long time ago, I also use Chrome don't have any problems myself.

I just use Adblock plus and it seems fine to me, don't seem to be having any problems as of at the moment.  I do use Chrome a heck of a lot it's a very good browser.

It's been years since I've spoke to you, any idea what happened to the others like Hangman or SuperNatural?  I can barely remember those days but they were good times glad to see you still using your old Username that's how I spotted you Big Grin

Hey Rodney, I hate to say this since you seem cool, but that must be another coyote, since I don't know what DJNap is or recognize those usernames. I mostly work on and share rock music at Dime, and TPB too under the coyote username. I didn't know the bittorent world had another coyote!

I can't speak for the TPB admin, but I'm guessing the ad networks that are willing to serve pirate sites aren't going to have the most user friendly ads, and the more intrusive and insidious, the better they pay.  A lot of people are already using adblockers on main stream sites with less annoying ads.  Most aren't going to turn it off even if TPB fixed the ads and asked nice.

Not really, for two big reasons: very few payment processors will serve a pirate site, and few people would be willing to share the financial and personal details required for payment with a pirate site.

Thank you very much Moe, both for the thoughtful (and realistic) answers, and for admin-ing Suprbay!

I very much like to use TPB to share stuff; so many people tell me they won't use it because of the ads, so I guess I'll start advising them to enable an ad blocker first.

It sucks if ad networks with tolerable ads aren't willing to serve TPB, so that the masses who don't block ads (either because they don't mind regular ads or because they aren't tech savvy enough) can't be part of using and supporting TPB.

If this is the only way TPB can survive, then I salute them for it (along with saluting them for all the structural measures they take to survive).
