Trisquel Linux "Etiona" 9.0.1

It's a Ubuntu fork that is also a favourite of Richard Stallman, the founding father of Freedom-based ethical technologies and the freedom movement for software in general. While Stallman says he has "never installed" an operating system before, you can be sure that it's easy to install, and I just installed it on my decrepit laptop.

Of course, I would also say that it's compatible with my favourite Ubuntu-based GNU/Linux customiser Cubic, it's got even more that surpasses the sum of its parts.

At a first glance, it's lightweight, the default fonts for the GUI is easy on the eyes (a real factor for the presentation as I am getting old) and I dig the wallpaper.

As well, the software that came with it, well, I cannot resist taking out some of it at first glance as I don't need most of it, although you guys don't really need to. It came with a Bitcoin Wallet program, Libreoffice, Jami, a conference tool, Cheese a webcam program that alters your captured facial image on the screen, so it does come packed out of the box. However, unlike most other GNU/Linux OSes, it only comes with what they term as "free software," both in freedom and price, and because of that fact, I think I know why Stallman has a hard-on with this OS. But being one that benefits from this lightweight OS and one that benefits from the 32-bit support that still exists, I would also have a hard-on with the OS.

The support is not much to be desired, as the forum has guys that use sarcasm and don't forgive, so the search engine is your friend. I did find a lot of good information from the search engine, and it's not impossible (or even hard!) to install codecs and libdvdcss2 (important if you want to watch outer-region DVDs). In fact I can tell you where you can get that information: https://trisquel.ino/en/wiki/enable-dvd-playback. Good luck with that.

Other than that, I would have not much more to say about it except that I intend to keep this. I don't want to use a Windows 7 or another gaming rig as I already have a Windows 7 computer with games. I also don't need a multiplayer computer companion as I have that too, so this OS will play a big role in keeping another GNU/Linux rig... and it's endorsed by Richard Stallman. Wink

The OS comes in different quantities as you can see in its download page: default (Trisquel), which is composed of the MATE desktop, Mini which uses LXDE, Triskel, that which sports KDE (I don't like KDE, but still...), an educational release, Sugar (http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/What_is_Sugar), and a text-based (no Gooey, guys), which obviously takes next to no space to set up.

I just used the MATE version and found it to my liking. It's still not comparable to a Windows 7 OS, but I want to leave the evil empire so I will keep Trisquel for a while longer.

Before writing this, I just tried using Wine on my laptop, which is an Intel Core Duo 2GHz machine, and it chokes on c. 2000 3D games like Warcraft III and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, so avoid installing Wine if you have that kind of laptop. I just want to be used to running GNU/Linux in preparation with the impending doom of not being able to use a crappy Windows OS (or in preparation to not use any crappy Windows or Mac OS, but maybe it's tongue-in-cheek talk), so that will make a difference in my computer usage patterns in the future.

OK, adios, amigos.

I hope this post will be forgiven, but I neglected to talk about an issue with Trisquel GNU/Linux, so I will do it now.

There is a known issue that Trisquel has with wireless functionality in that it has limited support for wireless network cards, and some of them may need to be flashed by firmware.

I am out to lunch about this, as I am with so many things, but don't say I didn't warn you...

EDIT: The link should read https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/enable-dvd-playback

MX Linux - https://mxlinux.org/

It's a Debian distribution - not Ubuntu - and it still supports 32-bit systems actively, just like Debian itself.

My opinion was that it's impressive; very easy and very powerful. I especially liked the non-complicated package installer and the remastering support.

Of course, for my needs, I had to use MX Snapshot, which allows for OS customisation. Very simple, yet, very powerful. You don't have to be a Shakespeare to use the software. You check the boxes in a very succinct user interface, and it starts for you. There are other remaster tools installed by default but this one suffices. With a few clicks you can make your own version of MX Linux which does come in hand if you don't want to download everything every time you need to wipe your system and start anew. Without that, it's a bitch.

The distribution doesn't accept third party repositories, so you can only use their own repositories for up-to-date software, but that's not a bad thing; it's mostly up-to-date. I was impressed with how they have latest versions of most software that I use.

I'm still new to this, but it seems that if Ubuntu/Linux Mint was to die tomorrow, I can come here and resume usage of my GNU/Linux boxes without jumping through hoops.

Download it today and see for yourself.
