I took notice of TPBs new tryout in terms of income, and was wondering if this would work on a smaller site?
I wanted to test it out on our home page and main index, the pages generating the most traffic (approx 500-700 users a day staying for 5-10min).
Our site is rather cheap but growing in cost, and if it proves to be a safe method, as I pay attention to TPB, would it be a viable source for income?
It'd just need to cover the server cost and eventual upgrades, not sure if you can mine parts of a monero coin or if you need to mine one whole for one to use it.

I assume it could be valuable if your users idle on one of your site tabs. Their collective power could help you reach a decent sum.

Nobody here knows the rates coin hive offers for sites of your size, the rates other providers offer, the percentage of your users using ad-blockers, or the percentage of your users who would abandon your site were you to introduce such a "feature".
So we cannot provide you with any meaningful answer.
That said, I would very much doubt it. Mining is a highly resource intensive process--small amounts of processing power yield very small amounts of dosh.

I would be skeptical and probably agree with Sid. You would have to count with possibilities he mentioned (users blocking mining, leaving, etc.), with that said I think you should try it (but without doubt, if you do, you should inform visitors). Coin hive provides some information on feasibility right here: https://coin-hive.com/#my-site - there are some estimates and formulas, count with worst-case scenario and you might be pleasantly surprised in the end. If you dont mind, inform us how you decided and how are you progressing I am quite curious. Also, what website are you running? I would like to visit it.

Agree, I think you should try it, but inform visitors

Don't do it. It's evil.
But I don't think it would work for a small site anyway. You need quite a bit of traffic and for the traffic to stay on your site for a long time.
But there is no harm in trying it. Other than being evil.

I dont think its evil, there is a common misconception that making, maintaining and hosting a website is free when its not.

(This post was last modified: Sep 28, 2017, 09:49 am by moonbyt3. Edited 1 time in total.)
why it would be evil?
if someone stays for 5-10 mins on your site and mine coins it wouldnt take much of his power or processor, and in return it would support site. no stupid ads, popups and things like that grants user better experience.
just make it transparent and don't turn it on automatically. let users decide if they would support you.
as i mentioned in one of my previous post, give some trust to receive it

Actually, it might work even better on a small site than on a large one, if it were implemented in a "launch a seperate window and mine for us with your own throttle control, plus visible status symbol" manner.
Small sites serve niches, by definition. They have a stronger sense of community, and a stronger sense of "the real possibility of closure". Whereas sites like TPB are simply expected by most people to continue forever.
Launching the seperate window would allow the mining to continue beyond the users onsite activity. Allowing them to control the throttling might even get them running it 24/7. And showing something next to their username on site would, like post count or rep points, lead to some people chasing for the sake of chasing.

It's evil because you are not telling the user what you are doing. You are using them, without thier permission or knowledge. That's evil. If you are up front about it, and ask for permission first or put it in your terms of service, then maybe it's ok, but otherwise it's evil.
