What is the point of the uploads thread?

Serious question because someone has suggested an uploads forum would be a better idea and because I don't think everyone actually agrees on what the idea is in the first place.

The "obvious" answer is that it lets you see what is being uploaded. But simply clicking on https://thepiratebay.org/search/daz3d/0/3/0 does an even better job of that because it includes things that people forget to post about in the uploads thread and also uploads by people who don't post on the forum at all.

Perhaps the idea is to allow you to post the sort of descriptions you would like to post on your torrents (or direct downloads) if it were possible to do so.

Or perhaps it is to get feedback on your uploads (again, because TPB and direct download sites don't really do a great job of facilitating that).

Or perhaps it is a way for you to compete with each other, in a friendly rivalry sort of way to the benefit of all.

I don't know, and I suspect you will each have different ideas about it's purpose.

Note that I'm not attacking the thread, I'm just interested to hear what it is about it that people value (which will help determine whether it needs tweaking in any way).

I'm uploading both here and at demonoid. The topic helps having all in one place.

Do you mean it provides redundancy so that if either Demonoid or TPB goes down people will still be able to find your torrents?

Because it's not really one place, it's a third place, so posting about your torrents here is an extra step you go through every single upload.

If you are using it for a backup, would having your own upload thread for just your torrents be a "better idea" for you?

No, it's not about the backup. Just having a one stop shop for the content. Instead of having to check out a couple, or more, torrent sites to find out if there's anything new.

Not sure if the issue I had this morning was down to my own computer, or a slowness of TPB search but I did the usual search on TPB for DAZ3D (the link Sid posted) and nothing had changed for a few days. However, when I looked in the forum, several posts had appeared in the uploads thread there, posted by other members.

Whether it's due to the thread providing redundancy, due to a force of habit carried over from KAT, or something else, I don't know. But I do personally like the Uploads thread and I don't mind uploading to TPB, then posting my upload to the thread, and am happy to even post an additional link to my upload in reply to a thread in the Request subfoum if a request was made there. Maybe I'm OCD but I like to cover all bases.

(Incidentally, a later search of TPB did turn up the uploads that had been missing earlier.)

well in my opinion, its a handy thing the upload thread as de4lt mentioned the search for the content doesn't always shows up on the search and its not a competition between uploaders its just to show people the content is up there in (a digital world, all alone sitting there, waiting for its love one.).

so to me the topic is relevant, also i think people appreciate it if we do.

I like the upload thread as it is usually illustrated with photographs - something not possible on TPB. I often happen across things I've missed despite having scanned the text only listings and frequently find gems that might have escaped my attention.

OK, I get where you're coming from.

But you do realize it won't achieve that, right? Not in it's current form. It can't, because not every uploader on every site posts details of every upload here.

Perhaps (to meet your idea of the point of this thread) we should encourage people to post not just their uploads but all uploads they find?

We could publish a list of places where such uploads can be found for willing volunteers to take it upon themselves to monitor
eg. https://thepiratebay.org/search/daz3d/0/3/0
https://www.demonoid.pw/files/?category=...uid=0&sort=

[I'm not saying do this, I'm just throwing it out there. What do people think? Where else can you find content?]

@De4lt: good point. Sometimes searches fail (on various sites at various times and for various reasons). Perhaps an uploader forgets the DAZ3D tag. Having a group of people regularly searching and reporting back would help solve that problem, no?

@soeperman: so if there is no element of competition, how would you feel if someone other than yourself were the one to report one of your uploads? Do you think other uploaders would feel the same way were it to happen to them?

@Jaded: noted (and thanks. I don't have any follow up question but didn't want you to feel left out. Wink )

A follow up question: if we're going to have a lot of posts about content, is some sort of categorization necessary (or useful). eg. based on the categories on the daz website, should we have separate upload threads for 3D Models and Assets, People and Wearables, Animals and Creatures, Places and Things, Animation and Poses, Resources and Add-ons? Or some other set of categories?

What do you mean dmca claims or uploader vs uploader?

As i remember there was one on kat.
dont know what other uploaders would say. but could be handy.

Neither. I mean that currently the uploads thread is where uploaders advertise content they have uploaded themselves. So the thread is less than complete. But if we allowed uploaders (even non-uploaders) to advertise content other people had uploaded (in the interests of getting a more complete list) it might mean that I for instance would post a link to something you had uploaded before you got around to doing so.

Some uploaders (I expect) would take offense at that.
