How many of you here use VIM, or VI-Improved?

I never really cared for it, but the interface was fun to learn if it is labyrinthe.

I had to use it to code C programs, and knowledge of its operation was required-learning on exams in my college.

Still, I prefer simplicity, so I just use the default text editor of my favourite GNU/Linux OS.

My point exactly!

Nothing "improved" over VI; it was like trying to perform heart surgery on yourself while chloroformed.

Still, I find it interesting. It's like learning a newer language and using it to speak another language.

vim adds many useful enhancements to vi.
If you have vim installed, ':help vi-differences'. See section 4.

vim has a number of plugins / scripts that can be used to enhance its behaviour. See here

It is a very powerful, lightweight text-editor, that still ranks high in user surveys.
gvim (the graphical interface) is only 2 MB and adds . Compare that to emacs (90MB)

There are lots of good tutorials and books on vim.
Endorsement: I edit my torrent descriptions in vim. ;-)

I learned it years ago for AIX and still use it today. I prefer it over all the other editors for coding. It is much better than the gay EMACS junk.

Thanks for asking...
