UK: Terrorists trying to take advantage of Afghanistan rescue flights, minister warns
#1
Potential terrorists are trying to exploit the chaos at Kabul airport to get into the UK, a minister has warned.

Defence minister James Heappey said the UK had to thoroughly check people being evacuated from Kabul following the Taliban takeover as some were trying to “take advantage” of the airlift to “cause us harm”.

Mr Heappey warned of the potential terror threat posed by some people attempting to board rescue flights from Afghanistan.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme:

Quote:“We would love to be able to just open the gates and let people in, an even faster flow.

“But there are people right now in Kabul trying to get onto British flights that we have identified in our checks as being on the UK no-fly list.

“So the checks that are being done are entirely necessary because there are people trying to take advantage of this process to get into the UK to cause us harm.

“Secondly, there is a real threat that our troops are facing and we have to therefore execute this as a military mission, whilst at the same time as being as humane as possible.”
