The Trussell Trust that runs 1,200 of the UK’s 2,000 food banks, say they gave out more than a million emergency food packages between April and September; nearly 500-thousand went to children. They also warn these figures are the tip of the iceberg.
Around two million people have used a food bank in the UK in past year, around 300 thousand more than the year before. While steps have been taken by the government, they’re not enough, which is why, charities say, they’re asking for donations from the public to tackle hunger in the world’s sixth largest economy.
The government’s £20 a week help with living costs has been a lifeline to hundreds of thousands of people on the lowest incomes, but it’s due to be cut in spring, raising fears of a sharp rise in poverty.
In the absence of an income, many adults living with children have reported skipping meals in the last eight months.
