So the Top 100 and 48h stats require a skull?
Is that right?
If so, respectfully, that blows
Sincerely,

You know what blows more? Seeing both filled with malware and fakes.

yeah yeah, i get all that.. It's just with no verification process, there is really no incentive to be active on the site
Jan 01, 2014, 14:09 pm
I thought the incentive was to share with others, not get your username into the top 100?

What I mean is this. The hidden value in tpb is that they have a true representation of what people actually 'VALUE". Versus a 'like' button or number of followers. People that take the time to share a torrent (since it's not super n00b easy), actually VALUE what they are share or seed. That information carries real value and is a threat to the new mainstream marketing engines. If a top site like this did true data collection, and had ACCURATE statistics, there is value in it beyond their dreams, and I truly do not know why that isn't leveraged. There are enough mods to keep the top 100 clean, and I know the community would sound-off on fakes and Trojans.. Challenging, sure, but the rewards are grand! -js It's like this, and it really is. TPB's enemy is the MPAA. Their money changes policy and TPB does a great job of surviving, but they need to legitimize if they are going to not only survive, but become a standard. Right now, the artists of original material are paid scraps, and have been, for a long long time. A major Hollywood production is an investment, and they generate profit using marketing engines, product placement, and distribution channels all taking a cut, plus they leverage the artists and writers to change their material to gain profit, not to showcase their work the way it was created. Now, if tpb say replaced the entire network of distribution, they could likely generate enough revenue for the artists directly, that they (or their agents) could generate just as much revenue and allow the artist to not have to make creative sacrifices. They can negotitiate their own product placement, cut percentages of the movie's profits with actors, directors (and they love that, as only the elite A-listers can command such a deal currently.) That is COMPETITION to the MPAA, and that is how you beat them. It only take ONE decent of body of work to do this, and it would become "the way" versus the problem.

i don't know the criteria for what appears in top 100 lists, a status higher than "member" does seem to be one of them. probably to protect against the torrential rain of fakers that attack the site every day (and can fake seeder stats).
as far as a "verification process," users are given status pretty regularly. if you continue to upload regularly and deserve status you will be given it eventually, probably sooner rather than later.

All that is needed is a verified status, and that only results in a good 'ol boy game just like republican America... No one can show a popular torrent unless they are deemed 'worthy' but the 'powers that be'.
Unverified can't hit the top 100, anonymous can never. It's stuff like this that enforces the fact that I know TPB is really struggling and can't implement new ideas. It seems now it's intended purpose IS to piss of gov't rather than serve it's users. That's a recipe for failure

Your head is full of all kinds of misconceptions.
They only purpose TPB serves is to host torrent uploads.

[Leave personal jibes out of this lest someone ends up getting banned. Just saying.]
OP has a valid point: the current system is hard on legitimate uploaders who haven't yet gained trusted status. But the previous system, where the Top 100 was based solely on reported swarm size, was hard on many many many more people because it was trivially easy to abuse. It was hard on legitimate uploaders "trusted" or not, who were frequently wiped off the board by frauds. And it was hard on downloaders, who not only weren't able to find legitimate popular torrents but who were also exposed to illegitimate and harmful torrents. ie. we're currently in a "lesser of two evils" situation. It is evil. But it is lesser. That is absolutely appropriate. So, rather than merely whining that the world isn't a perfect place, why not try to come up with some practical suggestions on how it can be improved. PS. Phoenix, you've veered a little off course in steps 3, 4 & 5. Some smaller sites do have a validate then ban or "verify" process but TPB doesn't. That's not to say they don't have a process, simply that it doesn't work that way. Mods don't review every single upload with a view to banning/verifying the uploader. Their primary focus is on spotting bad torrents/banning bad uploaders. The awarding of extra status to some uploaders is a secondary consideration, and it's a bonus not a right nor an expectation. There are many legitimate uploaders on TPB who haven't been explicitly recognised.

Well the more "verified uploaders" there is, tougher the task gets to look after the quality of their uploads. Why don't you just relax and upload your stuff, you may be the one in the top 100 one day or another, who cares ? |
