Tip: Copy-paste description from Amazon like sites on TPB
#1
Some of us, especially those who upload e-books, use the description section from a site like Amazon during uploading to TPB.

We simply copy and paste it into the description portion.
However when it is displayed, we see strange looking characters.
Eg., (I've chosen a torrent at random. Apologies/Thanks to WindroidX)
http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/9830742/

This "problem" seems due to, the different character sets employed on a site like amazon (charset: iso8859-1) and TPB (charset: utf-8).

One solution to solve this is as follows.

1. Copy paste the description into notepad normally
2. Go to File > Save As and enter a temporary filename (say a.txt)
3. Set Encoding to UTF-8 Unicode and save.
4. Copy paste this content to TPB description portion.

Suggestions/Corrections/Betterments welcome. :-)

It works as it should! Thanks.. Smile

I've just tested it on my latest upload.

As you can see, there are no strange symbols in the description.
Also, it made gaps in the lines, which makes the description more clean Tongue

Hmm, now am wondering how those nice extra blank lines came in, because it is one single line.
Anyway, this torrent's description looks like only ASCII characters. So we'll proly have to wait for something with "dashes", "quotes" and such. But it'll work I think :-) Thanks WDX.

My 2 cents :
Saving the torrent description in a text editor, like notepad, specifying 'Unicode' solves the problem of funky characters. It also prevents any loss of info in cases of site / human error.

Thanks gcjm. Saving it as Unicode works !

gcjm, saving as Unicode doesn't seem to work.

para 2. line 4. It is the apostrophe character.

I corrected it manually in para 3. It shows up as <92> in vim when encoding is set to utf-8. That way I can weed out strange characters. But a Notepad solution would be nice. I really don't get the difference between Unicode and UTF-8.

Any ideas ? (Some Tutorial I've written. Sigh !)
