The Short Stories Thread.

Am sure many of us like short stories.
If you do, please post the ones that you read and liked.

Please mention, story name, author and if possible provide a HTTP link to the story.

Upto 5 stories per post should be fine I suppose, just to keep it "short" :-)
Short essays (eg., A City Night Piece - Oliver Goldsmith) would also be welcome (i think).

Here's two to start with, I read the last week.

1) Professor Panini - Matthew Grigg

2) Soliloquies in the Bath - Frederick Karinthy

Hey, just found this thread and thought I would contribute.

I found this short story a while back and it really blew me away. It had a really strange writing style and was extremely emotional! I don't believe that the author has ever had anything published in print, I looked everywhere.

It's called Things by Noah Bailey, here's a link: http://www.beforeitgotcool.com/?s=things+noah+bailey

Never saw this [very good] thread before but then I'm a fliipper when it comes to web-pages. I like to think Salinger wrote some fine short stories.

Salinger - A Perfect Day for Bananafish

http://ae-lib.org.ua/salinger/Texts/N1-B...ish-en.htm

Salinger - For Esme, with Love and Squalor

and that exquisite story with a matchless "Yeats" title :

Schwartz - In dreams begin responsibilities

https://lingualeo.com/es/jungle/delmore-...06#/page/1

Bunin wrote some ravishing short pieces. Since the original language is Russian, I'm heavily biased towards certain translations. Because - some people translate well, they do not cut out portions they don't understand, are honest, etc. Being honest is by far the most important.

So in that vein, here's some :

Ivan Bunin - Raven
Ivan Bunin - Chang's Dreams
Ivan Bunin - In Paris

and a light hearted piece:

Bunin - The Hunchback's Affair

What delights me in the above stories, are the memorable descriptions, condensed imagery and the special "colored hearing". Hettlinger translations are good.

In terms of flimsy and whimsical little pieces, Walser is astonishing.

Robert Walser - Griefen Lake
Walser - A Curious City

Almost all of the pieces in A Schoolboy's Diary and other stories are great fun if only we don't read and run, rather dream a little bit.

Here's another, to get started. It's a well known short story - a bit too much anthologized. It's good - but things can be better.

Jorge Luis Borges - The Garden of Forking Paths

https://thepiratebay.org/torrent/9830622...(17_books)

It is propelled by good ideas - but the format and the container vessel may seem outdated.
