Positive News:

Eating foods high in flavonoids lessens the risk of cognitive decline

We all know that fresh fruits and vegetables are part of a healthy diet. And while filling up on foods like peppers, oranges, strawberries, and blueberries can help support virtually all elements of your physical health, a new study published in the American Academy of Neurology journal finds that they are also beneficial for your mental wellness. The reason? These snacks are all high in flavonoids, which can ultimately help lessen the risk of cognitive decline.

Dr. Walter Willett, the professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, professor of medicine at Harvard University, and study author, explained that flavonoids are compounds that are filled with antioxidants; they are typically found in most fruits and vegetables. To discover how flavonoids improve brain sharpness, Dr. Willett and his team looked into data from 75,000 participants, who were 50 years old (on average) at the start of the study and are now in their 70s and 80s. Over the course of a 25-year timespan, the researchers analyzed participants' questionnaires at four-year intervals and found that those who ate 600 milligrams (which translates to 0.02 ounces) of flavonoids every day had a 20 percent reduced risk of cognitive decline—as opposed to people who consumed just 150 milligrams (or 0.005 ounces) of these antioxidants on a daily basis.

According Dr. Willett, it's never too early to begin eating a flavonoid-rich diet; he explained that brains start declining starting in our 20s and 30s, but that reduction in cognitive function isn't noticeable until around 70 years of age. Thanks to foods filled with flavonoids, that deterioration should be less severe, since their anti-inflammatory nature helps prevent damage to the blood supply, which is "an important contributor to cognitive decline," he added.

In addition to eating foods high in flavonoids, like strawberries, which have nearly 180 milligrams (0.006 ounces) per a 100-gram (three-and-a-half-ounces) serving, or apples, which have 113 milligrams (0.003 ounces) in each serving, Dr. Willett noted that it is important to prioritize a well-balanced lifestyle, which should be full of physical exercise and free from smoking. "Nutrition has a lot to do with our cognitive health, and the choices that we make today concerning the things we consume have a big role to play later in life in protecting our brains," he said.

America's National Parks

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an American national park in the southeastern United States, with parts in Tennessee and North Carolina. The park straddles the ridgeline of the Great Smoky Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are a division of the larger Appalachian Mountain chain. The park contains some of the highest mountains in eastern North America, including Clingmans Dome, Mount Guyot, and Mount Le Conte. The border between the two states runs northeast to southwest through the center of the park. The Appalachian Trail passes through the center of the park on its route from Georgia to Maine. With 12.5 million visitors in 2019, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the United States.

The park is almost 95 percent forested, and almost 36 percent of it, 187,000 acres (76,000 ha), is estimated by the Park Service to be old growth forest with many trees that predate European settlement of the area. It is one of the largest blocks of deciduous, temperate, old growth forest in North America.

The variety of elevations, the abundant rainfall, and the presence of old growth forests give the park an unusual richness of biota. About 19,000 species of organisms are known to live in the park, and estimates as high as an additional 100,000 undocumented species may also be present.
Park officials count more than 200 species of birds, 50 species of fish, 39 species of reptiles, and 43 species of amphibians, including many lungless salamanders. The park has a noteworthy black bear population, numbering about 1,500. Elk (wapiti) were reintroduced to the park in 2001. Elk are most abundant in the Cataloochee area in the southeastern section of the park.

It is also home to species of mammals such as the raccoon, bobcat, two species of fox, river otter, woodchuck, beaver, two species of squirrel, opossum, coyote, white-tailed deer, chipmunk, two species of skunk, and various species of bats.

Over 100 species of trees grow in the park. The lower region forests are dominated by deciduous leafy trees. At higher altitudes, deciduous forests give way to coniferous trees like Fraser fir. In addition, the park has over 1,400 flowering plant species and over 4,000 species of non-flowering plants.

Classical Journey:

Ernest John Moeran

Ernest John Smeed Moeran was an English composer of part-Irish extraction, whose work was strongly influenced by English and Irish folk music of which he was an assiduous collector. His output includes orchestral pieces, concertos, chamber and keyboard works, and a number of choral and song cycles as well as individual songs.

He was born December 31, 1894 in Heston, Middlesex. His father was an Anglican clergyman born in Ireland and his mother was from the eastern part of England. When he was still a young boy, his father was transferred to Bacton, on the coast near Norfolk.

Ernest's early exposure to music was largely through hymn singing and folk songs, and he taught himself to read music from the hymnals. When he was enrolled in Uppingham School near Cromer, he learned the violin. His music master there was Robert Sterndale Bennett, grandson of Sir William Sterndale Bennett, one of the few notable English composers of the generation preceding Elgar.

Moeran studied at the Royal College of Music under Charles Villiers Stanford before service in the army during the First World War, in which he was wounded. After the war he was a pupil of John Ireland, and quickly established a reputation as a composer of promise with a number of well-received works. From 1925 to 1928 he shared a cottage with the composer Peter Warlock; the bohemian lifestyle and heavy drinking during this period interrupted his creativity for a while, and sowed the seeds of the alcoholism that would blight his later life. He resumed composing in the 1930s, and re-established his reputation with a series of major works, including a symphony and a violin concerto. From 1934 onwards he spent much of his time in Ireland, mainly in the coastal town of Kenmare.

In 1945 Moeran married the cellist Peers Coetmore, and for her he composed several works for cello. The marriage was not destined to last, and Moeran's final years were lonely. He died at Kenmare on 1 December 1950, having fallen into the water after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage. A second symphony was left unfinished at the time of his death. Composer Anthony Payne declared that "Moeran occupied a minor place in the music of his time, but his meticulously polished and ready technique is unsurpassed among his British contemporaries. This craftsmanship is evident in the clarity of his textures and processes, and in the superb sonority of his orchestral writing".
