so I've been mulling over this new kickstarter, I was indifferent with "The Return" I only enjoyed maybe 4 or 5 of the episodes out of the 14 they made, (yes I donated quite a bit to the first kickstarter) the Gauntlet felt unnecessary tbh. I looked at what they are offering and they want to do a premium service? a vr service and a 3D movie? feels like the essence of the original idea is lost and all this feels like a money grab. All I want is a set 3 people, 2 people doing the puppets and the voices decent writing not 30 different writers puppeteers plus voice overs and an over stylized set. I think thats what turned a lot of the old school fans off.

I just don't care to argue with the naysayers. Anyways, the news from earlier is that Jonah and the live show host Emily are going to take turns on epidoes with their relative robot voice crews. And Joel himself will host an episode or 2 depending on funding reached

Also this interesting tidbit...
"We've reached out to all of our former cast members to extend a standing invitation to come back to MST3K -- for a quick visit or for multiple episodes – any time they want.
Those guys are all incredibly talented and funny, and were such an essential part of making MST3K what it is. So yeah, of course, we'd love to have them back on the show. But – and this part is really important – a lot of MST3K alumni have their own movie riffing projects going on now, and want to stay focused on those."

That right there is total BS. It's almost a flat out lie to potential KS backers. As anyone here who follows the MST3K alumni should know, the RiffTrax guys and now the The Mads too have all gone on record saying they want no part of the nu MST3K.
I know he throws that last line out there to cover his ass, but essentially he's implying there's a chance of some awesome thing being in his product when there isn't.

I think it's just interesting that he's okay with working with them again if they want. Which, from what was said on the last couple mads shows, they don't seem to. I don't think ANYONE expects them to return to riffing a whole movie on mst3k, but Joel probably hopes for a cameo. Maybe if he tosses them some of that 500,000 dollars per episode.

Mary Jo, Kevin, and Bill returned to act in season 11, and Mary Jo and Bill wrote for the season. Josh returned for season 12, and he and Bill returned as Tom and Crow for shorts last year.
Mary Jo, Kevin and Bill were sounding doubtful about a return during the season 11 Kickstarter, too, then they were in it. So far we’ve only heard Kevin and The Mads say they won’t be part of the new season.
Given that, I don’t think the statement is total BS.

Was Emily really a host in the live show? She was a side character, but Joel gave her a major push at the end of the show for some reason. Nothing she did in that show or the livestream a few months ago made me crack a smile. At least Jonah is a real stand-up comic who had a track record before MST3K. Emily is a complete unknown.

if you listen to the various podcasts thoroughly (Bill and the Mads), it seemed obvious that that Bill and Mary Jo (and J. Levis too a bit I think? it's been a while) are generally supportive but also a bit wishy-washy/critical over the whole thing while Trace and Frank seem more, like, pissed off about it. iirc, it's been stated by a few folks that Joel didn't reach out until after all the announcements were made, making it seem like he only reached out due to the fan outcry.
personally I think the whole thing is becoming a bit sad. in my opinion, Joel's latest venture is as much 'MST3K' as Mike Love and his touring group of no-names is 'The Beach Boys'.
i loved the cast, writers, and crew of MST3K, the overall feel of their combined efforts, not just the name or the basic concept. Joel brought back the name and concept, but nothing else that I loved. Joel seems to think MST3K was successful because of him, rather than from being a unique ensemble effort (one which he quit from halfway through.....but I digress)
I also just want to say that if you are excited about more MST3K, i'm genuinely happy for you. I'm glad you're going to have all-new content that you're excited about. That's a great feeling to have! we're a community of riff-lovers here, nothing is personal, there's room for both unreserved love and sincere criticism. we can disagree without finger-pointing and toxicity, and I hope it stays that way.
