I am not getting a https connection on this forum using the onion address, not that it matters since I do on the regular address.

Same here, no https for suprbay onion site.
But there is not so much to worry about because your connection to the guards of the TOR network (also known as your first hop) is still secure.

It is quite expensive and largely pointless to get a certificate for a .onion address.
As stated, tor already encrypts the connection.

Seems like the endpoint can just collect unames and passwords.

The endpoint runs on the same server as the web daemon, so that is no different from HTTPS.

Thanks for explaining to me. The traffic never leaves the TOR network on an onion address. I am safe.
