SuprBay: Increase file size limitation for avatar
#1
Hey,

What do you guys think of increasing the filesize limit for the avatars? I have a 400kB gif that I would like to use at less than 150x150. It isn't unreasonable long either, like a second at most. I am sure there was a reason that the limit was implemented, but I feel it is unrealistic. Maybe a megabyte, or even 500kB?
Thanks for reading, cheers admins Cool

The size is present to limit the page loading time. Imagine every member had a 1MB avatar, that means that if you have 20 posts to show in a thread, that would mean 20Mbytes to load for every page you visit and counting only the avatar size, not the content which may be even bigger. Meanwhile not everyone has high-speed internet connections, and some do even use VPNs to navigate through SuprBay, which makes the page loading even slower. (And any increment in data size will need more bandwidth thus considerably reducing speed for everyone)

That's why it isn't a good idea to increase the size limit - and why it probably won't ever be done.

That. Plus it restricts the use of animated gifs. They add nothing to a site but annoying distractions.

If filesize limits are ever raised, to allow higher resolution images as screen sizes and bandwidths increase, animated gifs will be banned outright.

Now look what you've started OP.

I think they are just perfect the way they are [Image: hats_off_zps5fc55384.gif]

On the other hand browsers don't load the avatars each time they refresh a page. They can be cached.

You can always use a tool like Ulead gif animator or something similar to compress the file size, by using less colors or whatever.

Or something online like this.
