This episode of Defiance contained subliminal messages, a man in a balaclava flashed up a few times, it can be seen clearly when you pause. It makes you feel very uncomfortable. I'd like to know where they came from, it's not something I ever want to see again, not so much the content, but the fear that someone could slip a really nasty image in if they wanted. Is it some anti-piracy tactic? Did it come from Scifi channel, I can't believe ettv would add them. I'd like to understand what's going on.

The images you saw were actually part of the show, although I'm not sure about balaclava man, but back to him in a minute...

The images were flashbacks belonging to the show's characters, but they were unusually quick and certainly give the impression that there are subliminal images inserted into the episode. SyFy probably think they're being clever with these sudden short images, much like some film-makers think shaky-cam is a good thing.

I took screenshots of the flashback frames sandwiched in between 'normal' frames so you can see how much they contrast in light:

^^ That middle frame was super short and it's the sudden difference in light, that is giving your brain the jitters. These next 3 images were also sandwiched between frames of those same 2 female alien characters talking, and if you look at their clothing, you see they match the clothing worn in the show:

There was also some sort of weird exploding coloured glass church window thing going on...

a couple more frames, then this:

^^ again, those frames are so short that most people don't even spot them, so it's a bit pointless of the show's makers to include them, or to show them only for one frame. The conversation that takes place between the characters includes some mention of, or hints at, experiments gone wrong, escape, that sort of thing.

Balaclava man can be seen at 07.56, 08.14, 08.19, 18.01, 18.20, 18.49, and 18.50 into the episode.

I have no idea who he is but I can see why the images of him flashing suddenly like that made you feel uncomfortable. I can only guess that balaclava man is one of the show's characters, possibly who hasn't been in it yet, but with experiments and exploding glass going on in the flashbacks, he sure could fit into the plot as either a bad guy or good guy.

To summarise, the uploaders aren't to blame for these sudden flashing images that leave those who can spot them feeling anxious and on edge. You can thank the trickery-fuckery of the tv stations for that, or in this case SyFy.

Many thanks for your reply, I feel so much better now. I'm not sure why I'm still watching Defiance anyway, it's just crap SyFy garbage. Thanks for clearing that up, I saw the images, they are way too fast to see at normal speed, so I looked up the original UL and two other people suggested subliminal messages. It remained me of when people were playing with them back in the 80's, mainly just for a laugh. If I can be arsed I might watch the episode again, see if it makes sense, but typical SyFy pissing about as usual.
I'm ashamed I even considered that an honest up-loader would stoop so low and apologize to ettv.

No worries. Personally, I couldn't watch something like that with the sudden, pointless flashes. Those flashbacks should be easily viewable or not at all - balaclava man made me jump everytime I saw him. You might be better off looking for a different show to watch if the rest of the series is like that.
