Six Syrian soldiers wounded in Turkish artillery strikes in Al-Hasakah
#1
On June 4, six soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were wounded when the Turkish military and its proxies shelled the village of Umm al-Kayf in the northern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.

Umm al-Kayf is held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). However, the SAA maintains several positions near the village.

The Turkish military and its proxies fired more than a 100 conventional and cluster artillery rounds at Umm al-Kayf, damaging civilian properties as well as the local electricity network.

The Hawar News Agency identified the wounded SAA soldiers as Muhammad al-Omar, Osama Germani, Zulfiqar al-Sayyid, Muhammad Barzan, Ali Kanaan and Zaher Kazakhstiya. They were all taken a hospital in the SDF-held town of Tell Tamer, to the east of Umm al-Kayf.

The Turkish military and its proxies targeted SAA troops in SDF-held areas in northern and northeastern Syria on several occasions in the last few months. The army and its allies responded to some of the attacks.

The attacks on the SAA began following reports of preparations by the Turkish military and its proxies for a new operation against the SDF. These reports were recently confirmed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ankara is likely trying to pressure Damascus into withdrawing SAA troops from SDF-held areas. Such a move would facilitate a new Turkish operation against the group. However, this will not likely happen. Damascus is in fact taking steps to strengthen its presence in the northern and northeastern regions.
