Cats is the kind of bad movie that could only have been made by really talented people.  I wouldn't be surprised if it develops a devoted cult following in 20 years.

20 years? It had it once the first trailer came out. I saw it four times in theaters.

I don't think the cult following is very large yet but you're clearly in on the ground floor.  I will say Cats wasn't nearly as bad as I expected.  Some of the set pieces were nicely choreographed although the Buzby and Berkley cockroach number seemed like a pretty big misstep.  The director should have watched Joe's Apartment--there isn't any way to make those little buggers anything other than skin crawlingly gross and giving cockroaches choreography actually makes them worse than the real thing.  Out of curiosity, I read that Universal tweaked the digital effects to improve them after the poor reception in theaters.  Did you notice anything different?

I saw both versions and there wasn't anything substantially different other than you could see Judi Dench's wedding ring in the initial version. There's only so much visual effects could do since Tom Hooper made the insanely incompetent decision to film a mocap movie without tracking markers on the actors, which is a nightmare for the digital artists. Seriously, some of the effects people have genuine PTSD from working on this thing. Tom Hooper also made the insanely incompetent decision to film live singing without a click track when he did Les Miserables, which creates a nightmare for the editors and sound people. Hooper needs to go to movie jail for an extremely long time.
I don't know what mocap, tracking markers, and not using a click track mean.  It seemed like everyone liked Les Miserables (although I had a more mixed reaction) so I assumed Hooper did a good job directing it.  He got some nice vocals from the actors who could actually sing the material--Rusell Crowe who I'm usually a fan of definitely couldn't and Hugh Jackman who has done a ton of musical theater was disappointing at least where his singing was concerned.  I haven't seen Les Mis since it came out so maybe my memory is off or I would have a different reaction if I saw it again but other than a few musical performances the movie left me cold.  The source material (I'm talking about the book not the broadway musical) is powerful in a very manipulative way but the musical didn't capture much of the drama for me.

Basically, a click track is what allows an editor to keep audio and visuals in sync and recording something like live singing without it is just creating unnecessary headaches for your crew in post. Tracking markers are what mocap (motion capture like what Andy Serkis does so often) actors wear (those little balls on the suits) that allow the computer to record their movements in a 3-dimensional environment. Since Hooper chose to shoot without tracking markers, the CGI artists had to map everything on to the actors by hand and as you might imagine, that is a nightmare and it's why so many of the actors have roaming faces and don't quite touch the ground.

Thanks for the clear explanation.

**Beginning of file is silent until the movie starts about 42 seconds in... None of the movie is muted, just the company logo stuff. Second track is original movie audio**

This file was messed up and wouldn't play on Plex. I went in and completely redid it, added auto-ducking, fixed the silence at the beginning of the film, and adjusted the levels to where the riffs shouldn't blast the back of your head off. Apologies for that, was a quick and dirty edit and I'm still a novice at this. Hopefully this one will be all-round better!

Cats (Rifftrax Sync)

Enjoy, and don't forget to donate to RiffTrax!

Both links are now dead.

Any chance of a re-up?

I did search high and low... even some private trackers I'm on, this thread is the only source I could find, so thanks again! Cool
