Isn’t it the… piracy… that stopped them doing modern Hollywood stuff? I agree with you completely. I’d prefer they do movies that are otherwise of quality (in just production, or screenwriting, or both, even). I’d also like for them to “fill in the gaps” of the ones they’ve already done (Ocean’s 11 but not 12 or 13–the latter being the genuinely bad one? Jurassic Park but not II or III–the latter two being the genuinely bad ones? Indiana Jones I and IV but not… etc.). But… don’t they cite piracy as the reason they don’t bother?
I definitely haven't seen them directly cite that. They bemoan it a bit, but from what I gather the mp3s require more work (longer movies) and they also can't release them as VoD's. So those bring in a fraction of the income.
