Policy on letting old threads die, not merging not-100%-related threads a year apart
#1
With respect to your policies, most other Internet forums has a policy if a thread is, say, 120 days old with no new replies in the last 120 days, you are encouraged to create a new, similar topic than to continue the old one.

I created her a thread about 18 month ago. It ran its course. Then, 18 month later something come to my mind, which is about ~50% related to the old thread, but it's rather a big picture overview of the same issue, I thought it would be a better idea to create a new topic with a catchy title for the search engines to find it, too.

I do not link to my threads here on purpose, this is a general suggestion on how to run your forum. Smile Like most other forums are run. When a topic is old enough (and in this case, it correlates with the new one only in 50%, not 100%), it makes sense to let the old thread sink, and move on to the new thread? How do you think?

Now your moderation team may not participated in these other forums before which has these suggestion on let the old threads dying after they reach old age, and let us create new ones (especially if they are of a different, albeit related topic), so they merged my old topic into the new one, my topic starter, which I formed to be a topic starter got to irrelevant position as being re-positioned to be post no. x, and so on.

Yes, as you expected, my intended new thread relegated to be a sub-thread of the old thread didn't really catch up, in fact, it got zero replies in 4 days, already sank. Being it a separate thread on its own, at least I expected some expert insight and a little discussion on it, as I'm sure this topic is of interest of many.

So my general suggestion for the moderation team is, first to study and participate in other forums, which use this, usually 120-day policy of no activity, then letting old threads die, after this practice is established, maybe I can come back to you and try to redo/unmerge my two threads 18 month apart, and only related by 50%.

Thanks folks, I respect your work.

We do what works here because it works here. This forum has been around for nearly 10 years. We've had a bit of practice trying different things.

If your thread died, and no one responded to your merged reply, it was not because it was a merged thread, but because no one had any input they wished to share.

Us studying other forums isn't going to make your posts magically interesting.
