Playlists and EDL for uncut upgrades?
#1
Upgrading VODs with Blu-ray or DVD sources can interrupt the flow of riffs when the uncut version is much longer than the riffed cut, making long boring sections without riffs.

I'm experimenting with creating playlists and EDLs to tell a video software which portions to play for just the riffed portions. With this, someone can still play the whole uncut version if they want, or load the playlist for a normal riff experience but with better video quality.

VLC seems to support this with m3u playlists or with more complicated xspf playlists. m3u playlists seem to only halfway work. With my one experiment so far, VLC does jump correctly to different times, but only on the first play through that point. If you pass a jump point, then seek prior to the jump point and resume playing, the next time VLC reaches the jump point, it just plays the video normally instead of jumping again. Also, if a jump point hasn't been reached yet and you try to seek past the jump point, VLC starts playing at the next segment, instead of seeking all the way to where you clicked.

Mplayer supports EDL (Edit Decision Lists) and mplayer2 does too but maybe a different syntax. But these players seem out of date, and most people have moved from those to mpv.

mpv supports a different EDL syntax. My experiment with mpv works well. There is a slight pause when it reaches a jump point, but not bad. I only tested with command line mpv. I don't know whether GUI front-ends will support the EDL.

I will start collecting time codes, and generating EDLs and m3u's, at Github rifftrax-edl. For now, I can only think to watch the RiffTrax official VOD simultaneously with the uncut movie, then pause them and find the cut point and note the times. Slow and tedious. So I might not add many very fast. If others want to contribute any, I'll add those too.

If anyone wants to experiment...I created a low-bitrate encode of Kill and Kill Again encoding only the riffed portions from Blu-ray source. The times were: start-20:16.243, 21:14.885-26:37.124, 27:55.774-29:56.99, 31:04.703-33:04.865, 34:30.784-39:20.949, 39:23.910-41:56.98, 46:52.358-48:32.792, 48:39.507-48:58.401, 50:25.696-52:51.676, 53:53.779-54:17.11, 61:19.141-68:04.045, 68:37.078-69:51.778, 71:19.699-76:25.505, 76:44.732-81:24.762, 88:20.886-89:11.288, 89:58.859-end

Github took the repository down for violating TOS, which surprised me since it only hosted timecodes for the project, nothing copyrighted. I wanted to keep everything in a single central place. Oh well.

Now I think I will just include the necessary EDL and playlist files in the torrents when I release encodes. I don't like it when torrents have extra files I don't need, but this seems the best way to make sure random downloaders know that they can skip over the unriffed parts.

I just released the first low bitrate encode to include these, Contamination. It has about 10 minutes of unriffed scenes, so it seemed worth making it easy to skip over them.

Download the budgetbits release: https://1337x.to/torrent/4734919/Contami...udgetbits/ or use the magnet link: Contamination (1980) RiffTrax triple audio 720p.10bit.BluRay.x265-budgetbits

To use the .edl or .m3u with a different movie file, edit the .edl or .m3u with a text editor to change the referenced movie filename.

Feedback welcomed!

Fangs of the Living Dead with edl/m3u so you can play either the full cut with about 20 minutes unriffed, or the riffed cut:

Download the low bitrate encode: https://1337x.to/torrent/4760856/Fangs-o...udgetbits/ or use the magnet link: Fangs of the Living Dead AKA Malenka (1969) RiffTrax triple audio 720p.10bit.BluRay.x265-budgetbits

Time codes:

61:52.188-79:30.578
80:19.294-83:14.802

About five or six of the riffs only make sense with the edited official RiffTrax cut.

Thanks to herod for the riff sync and the alternate ending!
