"Peerblock + P2P (default list)" blocking IPs while downloading a Bittorrent Bundle

This is the interwebz, anyone can claim any credentials they like that doesn't make them an expert or what they say any truer. I flew a Ka-50 but that doesn't mean I know the star sign of everyone I fired upon (or even that I flew a Ka-50).

It so happens that I really do know a thing or two about keeping bad guys away but I sure as hell don't claim definitive knowledge of the identity of everyone who has ever or will ever upload to TPB based upon nothing but their IP addresses.

Anyone foolish enough to believe anyone who makes such claims deserves the extortion letters they will subsequently receive. [Not that anyone deserves that shit but if anyone did it would be the people relying on tinfoil hats and PeerBlock to protect themselves.]

I was willing to consider the arguments for a second until they started ranting about TorrentFreak. Brilliant way to generate credibility. I'm not saying TF is a shining star, but when they spew that much inane text to complain about one guy who is an occasional editor there, I stopped taking it seriously.

Blacklists certainly have their place. Bittorrent isn't one of them.

This would be as well for the ipfilter.dat into µTorrent ? I mean I've stopped using peer guardian/peer block ages ago (more than 5 years)

Yesterday for instance I was going to post a thread talking about that (blocking some ips) as I had to block through ipfilter a antiP2P org. (rogers cable) but as i was trying - sorry i should say " as I was forcing" links into my post (µtorrent forums links) i ended wit ha message saying a mod would have to look to it ... nvm

So ipfilter.dat is usefull right ? 31400 ips blocked in last update...

So you admit you aren't thinking it through and stick to an assumption because you disagree with one point on the whole page.
Try reading with the intention to learn something instead of just looking for an argument, because you are standing in your own way there.

Yes, that method helps, and you can use much larger lists than you would with PeerBlock.
You might want to use PeerBlock anyway, because there are a lists to block malware, ads, hackers and spies etc. etc. It isn't just for P2P safety.

I read it and it makes perfect sense. But it is still largely self promotional, and immature rants don't help anything.

But the whole page is a generic reasoning for P2P in general, and I am arguing its usefulness specifically for bittorrent, where I believe it has none.

With other forms of sharing where you do send a complete file to another peer, not connecting to them can protect you.

But bittorrent is an entirely different beast. By the time your blocklist kicks in, they already know you are there, and whether or not you send them a block or two doesn't make a difference. Find me one - just one - case out there that was decided based on sending off a few blocks to an observer. It doesn't exist because if that is all the evidence they have, they aren't going to prosecute. If you are facing prosecution, then they have a shitton more evidence than what a blocklist can protect you from.

There is not much to consider.  Look at the first 4 posts in this thread, and consider what was written in your other thread.  Both cases are examples of where blockslists do harm.
