So I managed to find an alternative method, which is using a small executable I got from the microsoft site to download the update through. However, I put the key in, it says below that it 'checks out', but when I click next i'm told 'We can't connect right now. Check your internet and try again'...

I tried a few different keys and was able to get past the 'can't connect' message but instead it said something like 'we can't download to your region'.

I'm going to download this torrent instead because I think the problem is a mismatch between my current OS and the one in the original torrent I downloaded:

You need to go onto the MDL forum and register. Then head to the Windows 8 thread and post the issue there. You'll have a better chance of getting a solution from the forum where the activation/install methods etc were conceived than here.
