Opening the iRiff floodgates (temporarily)

Also thanks to everyone for what they recommend. There are a lot of poor quality iriffs out there so it is great to hear what is good and should be checked out.

I also want to give a shout out to Hor-riff-ic as I think their riffs (as well as the films they select  to riff) are absolutely outstanding. And the Joe Bob Briggs files are awesome too (even if they aren't really riffs)!

I've long held the opinion that there are a few fundamental, if unspoken, rules for being a good or bad riffer.

--Walk on as little dialogue as possible.
--Have actual wit.
--Don't cram jokes or comments into every breath (I'm looking at you Matthew J. Elliott).
--Have fun with it; don't treat it like a chore or job. Both show to the audience. The former can charm a show, the latter can spoil it.

Hor-RIFF-ic is decent, but it's the "have fun with it" aspect that I think is their shining star.

I get so frustrated with MKB sometimes over walking on dialogue. They tried to avoid it early-on, and almost never did it on MST3K, but as time went on, it just got worse.

I got to confess, you did get on this. I was able to upload everything that I could possibly find in the IRiff catalog. And convert them.

Well, convert most of them. I can't convert the Ronin Fox-Batman and the 3 Hot Riffs-Candyman ones because their codex is not supported on my computer, and I needed a Windows 10 with Directx 1 and a HEVC compatible graphics card.

Otherwise, good work.

Heya,
Any idea who synced the Heckle & Jib Superman III riff? Its a  super (heh) fun riff, and an excellent sync!
This isnt a left-handed compliment, the sync/HD movie source is great, the original audio levels of the riffing (by H & J) is very uneven, but I really like the riffs and the video is (super) top-notch!

I do wish i had more from these folks.

I created the Super-Man III sync (thanks to DarkPrince for the files and specifically requesting that sync) I had some grand ambitions in doing a bunch of syncs but quickly lost steam and time. I need to share them though as it doesn't do anyone any good just sitting on them.

I like those rules. What are your thoughts on this rule: Don't spend your time shitting on the movie. If you do it, do it minimally.

I listened to an iriff today and they were just bashing everything and it made for a bad track (and it probably didn't help that I like the movie).

I completely agree, and would have included it had it not slipped my addled mind. Smile

I've often gotten frustrated at riffs for basically insulting a film, component of same, or actors. With B-movies it's easier to get away with, and usually takes the form of gently (lovingly?) ribbing the film's obvious shortcomings (typically the results of the low budget, or the bad acting from cheap hires that have barely had any acting classes and think they're ready to do Hamlet on the big stage). But man, they just can't help themselves when it comes to blockbuster riffs that actually have fans, and/or are actually good movies, causing you to react poorly to the line that was supposed to make you laugh.

Remember, MST3K's premise wasn't to bash the films themselves (although sometimes it just couldn't be helped), it was to rebel against the forced testing by "cutting up," poking fun, and generally not taking the films seriously, all to skew the results and piss off Doctor Forrester. He was intentionally feeding them bad movies, so to outright bash them would be exactly what he wanted. Playing along, however, and actually having fun with them would perpetually ruin his experiment. I loved that premise, but over time they did drift a bit into unintentional compliance.

I'm a Joel & Crow guy (still love Mike, so don't shoot me), but my absolute favorite bit, seconded by "when you're out of slits, you're out of pier," is the final moments of the series, as the escaped Mike and bots get an apartment, and find themselves plopping down in front of the TV, only to instinctively start riffing what's on the screen. It was a perfect ending to the show, but I also think it would be funny to discover they were being monitored for "genuine" results. Smile
