I just recently got into torrents, and have yet to figure it all out. I did get a VPN before downloading anything, and this morning I managed to create my first torrents, which I can seed, but not upload anywhere. I suppose I have to have an account on TPB, but the site will not let me register for some reason. I tried, and never got a confirmation email, and now it will not let me use my email address because it's already in use, but if I try to get a password reset I'm told my email address is not in the database. So I'm stuck.
So if I am seeding the torrents I created this morning with my VPN on can anyone see them anywhere? I used a TPB tracker, but it seems to me I'd have to upload them for anyone else to get them, unless they download them from my machine, and can they do that? I really don't know how all this works yet.

Ok, if I may have the first suggestion. I know how you feel as I've been there myself before. Signing up to TPB is hard because they make it fairly hard to try and stop all the Spambots and Hackers and people who just want to flood the site with spam and rubbish. This is just going on all the time really people trying to make a mess of everything so blame all that really. I'm sure that you might be able to manage it, I'm sure the Admin here will be able to assist you. It's possible, I'm not 100% on this but maybe your email address provider might be blocking you in some way. Therefore you never do get the sign up email in your inbox. It also could be there's a big delay and you might have to wait a while. I know that sometimes certain email providers can cause problems with certain sites. I haven't signed up at TPB for a few years now and if you do get an account then hold onto it like gold dust cos once you've got one don't let go and look after it and it will look after you.
Also I know that using a VPN can cause problems as well and sometimes the IP address of the VPN you are using could well be blocked as some kind of Spambot or uploader has been abusing it. It's possible the sign up might have been blocked but then again it may just be a case of the fact there is a delay in the system. I'm not an admin so I don't know exactly what is going on but you've done the right thing coming here to post about it so just see what somebody has to say...

Thank you Rodney!
I think I have already run into the problem of some spambot abusing one of the servers of my VPN, I got notices in my browser of that while connecting through one of their servers. I hadn't thought about that, but I'm quite sure spammers and other bad people would love to abuse the VPN servers.
So the problem could be my email provider making sure I don't get any email from TPB, or I could just be running into TPB's own defenses. It seems there are just all kinds of snags to this torrent thing. I hope someone can help me with this because I don't want to be a permanent leech, I want to give back, but unless I can get that account I've no way to upload. So do you know, if I create torrents and seed them using TPB's tracker, can anyone get them without my uploading them? If not there's really no reason for me to be seeding them.
Perhaps I can get an account on another torrent site and upload there, but I've run into this same problem on a couple other sites as well. They just will not let me register. So how are you supposed to not be a leech if no one will let you upload?

May I suggest just go and try and give Demonoid.pw a go and see if that will work. I just checked then and today being saturday it seems that registration is open there right now so possible you could get a Demonoid account. I know I'm sorry to tell you this but uploading and making torrents is a lot of faff and messing around. It can take ages to get things all right I'm sorry to say it's a learning curve and the more you learn about things the better you can get at it like a series of steps you just have to go through everything in the right order and then you're sure to get your torrent on a site and people will notice it and download from you.
Never know Demonoid might be a good place to start if you haven't tried there already ;-)

Okay Rodney, thanks, I'll give Demonoid a shot. I'm still not clear on the seeding/upload thing. Just to be clear, I DO have to upload the torrents for anyone to get them, right?

You have to be able to send an entire copy of your torrent to the first few people who download it. Then once you've done that you are just making more and more duplicates of it. You simply do it from your client. Allow it to sit there and upload while other people connect to your machine and start to make a copy for themselves. Sometimes it can take a while, take me for example, I have made some huge torrents in the past and it requires a lot of messing around. If the torrent is good then you will attract a lot of people. Remember at the first time when you upload is the point where people will notice the torrent the most as it will index on the system (torrent site) and people will see it. That's all computers are really just tools for making duplicates. Whether you are copying something over to a USB stick, downloading a copy of a website onto your laptop so you can view it yourself, making a torrent and uploading copies to other people globally. It's all the same it's just downloading and uploading and networking really. Sending out packets of data. In torrents you build a torrent using "pieces" and each torrent has a number of pieces and once the person downloading has completed all the pieces then they have the full torrent. Depending on how big your torrent is, could mean you have thousands of pieces. You can choose to decide yourself what piece size you have, depends really on the size of your torrent originally on what you require ;-)

So, I actually don't have to have an account on TPB to upload to, just torrents with their tracker that someone will want, right? Hey, I registered on Demonoid after you told me about it, but still no activation email. I guess it might take a while.

If you want to you can upload to TPB anonymously so you don't have to have an account. With Demonoid it is a requirement though so you will need one there. Depends really if you want people to know who you are at TPB, whether you want people to come back and click on your name so they can view what you're sharing. If you upload anonymously then it means that people won't know who the uploader is that way.

A few hints as I too am a newbie:
1. System care is important: A vulnerable system may fail and in case you don't have a backup to quickly restore things, people will be stuck with incomplete torrents - We don't want that and torrent sites may ban you for it. Won't help your reputation, too. I just got into that bad spot and am slow and painfully rebuilding, by downloading my stuff back again, but some files can't be found (nobody downloaded them 100%) nor reconstructed.
At some point I'll buy me a torrent box (a small PC just to run my client 7/24h) and a backup drive. Just Lady Luck didn't favor me and the wreck came first.
2. Using a index site like TPB is easy (once you register), but it has some glithces and downtimes (off-line) - Having other options like Demonoid, RarBG, 1337X, etc will cover, but also increase your demand (more downloaders), thus your responsibility. And some sites may request to post exclusive torrents (see rules and search before uploading). Think of your bandwidth and availability before starting one more new torrent.
Contacting the moderators here is easy (see Account Issues). Given a respectful, non-demanding atitude, they're glad to help!
3. Speaking of search, TPB has a cronic problem with it and mods suggest we use Google search instead, like in these threads...
https://pirates-forum.org/Thread-Search-...epiratebay
https://pirates-forum.org/Thread-Search-...epiratebay
Besides working better, such search mechanisms can easily find misspelled or foreign words, and provide better search patterns / tools.
Just keep in mind big corporation search sites will comply to DMCA removal/block requests and give priority to profitable advertisers, etc.
4. Share ratio is an old standard but it still says something about you and the torrents you use. I have a hard time filling my quota as my low bandwidth can't compete with better uploaders/ as torrent clients (apps) automatically scan and switch to faster sources, I get very few downloaders. TPB doesn't require ratio to be good, but some sites do. But TPB still want's us to seed properly.
Just for fun (after all this long gibberish), my view of it:
This will avoid people from downloading more than they can upload back, thus reducing the download demand, and to some extent making it harder for the uploaders to find a large ammount of downloaders. Torrenting is like a pyramid (Ponzi) scheme without the money, only digital media (that costs money).

Aha! Thank you for that! I didn't know I could upload anonymously! Obviously I'd want to do that over my VPN, and it might take a while, my upload speeds on this connection are not what I'd like. Still figuring all of this out. I used to have a few good download sites that were not torrents, but they went extinct one by one over the last year or so. I've been collecting video for years and have a lot I could share on a 48tb disk array, I just don't want to run into trouble doing it.
Now the instructions I used to create these torrents said to compress the files and I did that, they are zip files containing whole seasons. Is that how it's usually done? Also, I can't see anywhere on TPB's site to upload. The front page doesn't seem to have that. How do I find it?
