I have ripped many movie files now for years and I just use Atmos and TrueHD passthru and it works really well but I don't have the Atmos ceiling speakers installed I have a good receiver that can handle all that but just can't be bothered to put speakers on the ceiling.  The passthru for me works really well and I don't compress down or change the sound format I only compress down the video so it's easier to download.  Maybe one day hard drive space might be cheaper and bigger better seeding might go on but until then I'm sticking to HD as the titles are more widely available (somebody has to get the proper original disc and copy it that's what I do mostly) then that way you can access more things.  UHD is okay but you'll find it's really expensive and yes you're right using digital format is much greater I can access myself a full library in seconds where as with discs it takes minutes but it's true if you want the best HDR then look no further at the latest UHD releases.  I actually watch on a very good TV which has all the best upscaling technology anyway so really going up from HD looks nice to me and sit a few feet away from the screen and everything looks decent so I've no complaints I'm actually a Kodi fan especially when it comes to Cinavia the dreaded Sony watermark protection  Rolleyes

I really appreciate your help, however, i would like to stick with my current use case and adapt my media collection to the changing codec environment.

That is just retarded. I can use as much bandwidth as i want to download and upload data. 30mbit up and 100mbit down. i have a monthly transfer of +/- 7.5TB. Never got complaints from my isp. I do not just download, but seed and upload it to backblaze for save keeping. no raid 1 required this way.
why would the regulator limit the usability of your connection? Just to fight against piracy?

You really should. The difference between with and without atmos is incredible. Bohemian Rhapsody without atmos is flat and unbearable.

Life is good with your own home cinema

I am talking about professional environments, not domestic, it is a completely different set up.  Home internet works in different ways but the regulators of the backbone connections don't allow for abuse and the punishment results in zero bandwidth so it's not silly or retarded just how it works and all the rules that have been in place for years.

not sure why anyone would use business connections to get his/her movies.

I don't think you seem to understand what I'm talking about but I won't hold it against you.  Besides there's enough said already and you are starting to drift off topic a bit so I'm going to end this conversation here.  The correct topic as you said in your original post: "how do I convert this audio?" is the correct discussion that should be going on here.  I think we just got our wires crossed somewhere so I'll leave it there but good luck with your converting I hope you can sort it out though sounds like a big job might take you a few months but good luck with that  Smile

Did you ever consider that it could be your writing which causes the confusion?
