Martial arts movies that kick arse.

Post the best martial arts movies here, and tell us why they kick arse.

Please mention the film's fighting style (mention the dominant style if there are several), country of origin, language, and feel free to provide an IMDb or similar link, torrent link, and a trailer to show why it's a top watch.

I'll kick off with the best martial arts movie, ever, Ong Bak (2003). Shame on you if you haven't seen it, it's a must see and kicks more arse than all the other martial arts movies ever created put together. Big Grin

The film's style is Muay Thai, and unsurprisingly, the film was released in America as 'Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior' (Muay Thai Warrior in some places), a move I think, that belittles the US audience because it implies that the american public are so stupid, that they need the name of the fighting style in the title to help them understand what it's about.

When the film was released at the cinemas in England, I went every day for 2 weeks to watch it, that's how goddamn awesome it is. I even pre-ordered and queued up for the DVD upon it's release, something I've never done before, or since. The movie is in Thai, and I prefer to watch it as it was released, rather than the fully-dubbed version, because let's face it, dubbed martial arts movies are the pits. I've lost count the number of Chinese films I've seen, where the characters have english names like Tony, Dave, and even Henry, or worse, they have scouse accents, which removes most of the movie's authenticity.

The film's star is Tony Jaa, and he has a very, very nice set of tibialis anteriors. If you know muay thai, you'll appreciate the importance of rock-solid tibs, and some of the kicks in this film are breathtaking to watch.

Although I recommend watching Ong Bak in full, here's a clip of one fight scene:

wiki, IMDb, rottentomatoes, TPB

This is one of those rare movies that has you saying 'whoah!' out loud every few minutes, nothing beats this movie for kick-arsery. 10/10 [Image: Hc6sWq3.png]

Oh and did I mention that there is no CGI or camera trickery-fuckery of any kind in Ong Bak? That's right, when I say Tony Jaa, and Ong Bak kick arse, I'm not kidding. You won't find any of that arty-farty jumping up in the air and landing on a leaf nonsense here. Wink

No frills, no wires,no fancy film editing, just some of the flat out best hand to hand martial arts that you'll ever witness - period.

I must admit that I was a little sceptical myself, but after seeing it all doubt in my mind has been erased and then some.Never before or never again will such a movie be produced,so much work must have been put into the choreography that it would take an encyclopedia to remember all the various moves presented throughout the fight scenes(they get that intricate).
This is definitely Sammo Hungs' absolute best directorial edition and cannot be touched, while I must admit that I have already fallen too deep into the Jet Li "wire-fu" era(I've seen them all) to call this one of my favorite movies,it still brings me to owe more respect to this movie than just about all others.
I've also seen so many awesome martial Arts flicks that I cant ever decide what is my favorite, but I do have 'favorites'...too many to list ...see my torrents promotion link or check out my torrents through my profile link.

Orochi (1925)

The kinetic sword fighting scenes masterfully performed by Bandō were novel in an age when kabuki-style, leisurely and dignified movies were the norm. This style was passed onto modern chambara films. Additionally, the sword fighting style's aesthetic value is slightly lost in Orochi due to the pace at which the fight scenes were filmed (fast-forward motion). Due to the kabuki style, the makeup on the characters transformed them into almost identical representations of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), a major Japanese art form.

Anything Jet Li, Yun-Fat Chow, Michelle Yeoh, Ziyi Zhang, and of course Bruce Lee.
Jean Claude Van Dame and Chuck Norris are good fighters and put up some good scenes, but most of their movies are Hollywood mainstream.

Dude what's wrong with you? Dreamworks animation is not any movie that kicks arse, never mind a martial arts movie that kicks arse. Read the first post and come back with a proper martial arts movie with human actors in it, and offer a bit more than just the movie title, you lazy, lazy bugger.
