the issue with the lausd's school police having rifles is that they don't need them... just like they don't need grenade launchers or a freaking tank.

The real question is why does a school need a police department at all? Is there that much going on at a school that they need police there walking the halls? If there is the issue is the schools and the people attending them.

puberty can make kids do all kinds of weird shit -- and in that respect -- i can understand the desire to want a tank with grenade launchers and other semi-automatic weaponry... but i can never condone it. it's over kill. their city and county police brethren use their side arms to kill kids all the time... they don't need the heavy weaponry.

the lausd is an incredibly large, bloated and inefficient bureaucracy... it's only natural that they would feel they required their own private police department to support their own interests.

the purpose of the lausd police was originally to patrol areas surrounding schools looking for people that shouldn't be in the area such as drug dealers, pimps, whores and the like... but essentially, they are just glorified security guards. parking enforcement, responding to security alarms, looking for suspicious vans with murals painted on the side in the vicinity of schools, etc.

Well grenade launcher maybe not they have other ways to send tear gas. But you aren't going to get rid of a semi-automatic weapons... noone in the right mine that needs to carry a gun for defense will carry anything other than a semi-auto.

Real problem is fear campaigns and people who don't know anything about weapons making it out like these things are military super powerful weapons.

is the case of school police... anything more powerful than a rape whistle is a super powerful weapon. if the situation arises in which a real cop is needed, they can just blow on their whistle and wait for help.

What you are saying is the school police are pointless. I agree they are pointless but you do have a school shooting once in a while. If I was a school cop and someone told me that a kid has a good I would quickly walk to my car and get out of the way if I didn't have a gun.

Which is fine since that is normally what happens at school shootings but then you are just saying school cops are a waste of money. (which i agree)
