Flip

I've drunk a fair amount over the years but mostly it has been for the effect rather than the taste.

By a roundabout set of circumstances I recently found myself in possession of the basics of halfway decent home bar, and so I've done a bit of research and set about working my way through the myriad of cocktails I've heard of but never tried before (or at least never seriously, soberly or with any real clue). It all seemed so complicated and rather than order something essentially random, as I had no idea what was what, I've generally stuck with bourbons and dark rums, straight or with a small range of basic mixers.

Turns out it's not as impenetrably complicated as I had always thought.

Which brings me to flips. Drinks made with raw eggs. Exactly the sort of thing that I was always rather afraid of.

But...they are fucking delicious. So far I've tried a bourbon flip (amazing), a rum flip (even better) and I'm sitting here with a brandy flip (which is so good I think I've died and gone to the opposite place to where I expected to end up). I'll be carrying on this line of investigation through several of the light spirits.

On the other hand I have tried a couple of "snappers": a bloody mary and a red snapper (the same drink but with gin rather than vodka). They were absolutely disgusting and will no doubt be the preferred tipple in the place I do expect to end up.

In between: variations on the martini formula. Drinkable at a pinch imo but I can't say I'm a fan. It seems I really don't like gin very much (whereas before it was more a case, to be honest, of thinking that I wouldn't like gin). I wonder if it's an acquired taste?

Anyway, any of you have any adventures with cocktails?

Margarita: fresh lime juice, triple sec, blanco tequila.

Long island iced tea: vodka, rum, tequila, gin, triple sec, sour mix, splash of coke.

Manhattan: bourbon, sweet vermouth, cherry garnish.

As in you've heard of them, tried them once, drink them regularly or...?

I have had margarita's before. Most memorably tailgating in San Francisco with the Gypsies in the Palace hash house harriers a few years ago. Which later led to one of the relatively few times I've been blackout drunk. I have absolutely no memory of how that night ended. I do like them, and that is a family of drinks which I do plan to explore.

Long island iced tea: is one I've always avoided (and will continue to avoid). Although I used to drink to get drunk I was never in that much of a hurry to achieve it. Now that I know a bit more about what I'm doing it just seems like a drink ill-conceived for drinking pleasure. For that matter I have also given up on all layered drinks (not that I ever really drank many of them) -- they strike me (now) as being more about looking pretty and not at all about pleasurable combinations.

Manhatten? Good point. I put that in the Martini family. I have had one in my new hobby and I wasn't blown away. Makes me think--it may be vermouth that I'm not liking? It could also be that being one of the all time classics I've probably been imagining it for so long that the reality simply doesn't match my expectations. I remember that it took me quite a few years to get used to drinking wine. As a kid I had imagined myself drinking wine when I was actually drinking orange cordial. Needless to say wine doesn't taste anything like orange cordial, it was so disappointing when I finally got to try it. Now? I prefer reds. Pinot Noir is my go to. I don't really have a favorite white. I've never liked champagne. I will probably explore wine-based cocktails at some point but that's not a priority.

Those are my go-to drinks. Manhatten when I want to be classy. Margaritas are just delish. LIIT when I want to get lit quickly.

Speaking of Pinot Noir that is my favorite varietal of wine. Having a glass (bottle) of Kendall Jackson PN atm.

If you didn't enjoy the Manhatten upgrade the bourbon.

I'm working through a bottle of Woodford Reserve atm, so it's pretty decent but I take your point. I'd like to try it with a Rye whisky. That was actually what many of the classic cocktails were originally made with, before bourbon became a thing.

Jack Daniel's

Taste is trial and error for me (I like pretty much everything). Only adventure I have with JD is getting it to me to share for a cheap price, anyway good start to try.

I (like how you described) used liquor as more of an application to get drunk... I wasn't really a connoisseur. However, there were a few things I actually fancied. The list is limited, since, again, if it got me drunk I drank it... But these are ones I actually ENJOYED drinking,

Jagermeister (right out of the bottle.) NO time for shots.

Long Island Ice Teas tasted really good to me...

151 Rum and Coke.As hardcore as that is, you can barely taste the Rum. Also, if you can, get the Coke from McDonald's... I read where they have purified water they mix and make it better... I tried and LOVED it. Regular Coke is good, but McD's Coke seemed to go down more smoothly.

I like Martinis (the kinds I've tried were all good)... I haven't tried them all though.

Tequila is good to mix with apple juice... Otherwise, I just use it for the buzz. Never really got used to the taste...

Other than that, I'd drink mainly Amstel Light (tastes better and is more effective than Heineken IMHO). Heineken.

I've actually never heard of raw eggs... Intriguing... That would probably be something Rocky would use to get drunk.

Now taht you've got a bar, I hope you don't have kids in the house. I've tasted too many because family used to gather...

My favorites - Sorry, don't have recipes, I don't drink in my house, just out:

Piña Collada - traditionally served in a carved pineapple instead of a glass; includes apple, lime, coconut (and pineapple). Milk shave variation too.
(the secret is a good bartender can make this innocent tropical poolside drink to order, fitting your need/taste for adventure)

Cramberry soda; many recipes.

Martini; idle.

Screw Driver; vodka and orange juice (or better, orange soda; even better, grapefruit soda).

Cherry Brandy with cream; or put choco-truffle cream and get yourself a badass stomach ache and a hellass hangover next day.

Alexander - Yeah, silly grammy shoter but enjoyable; feels funny after four or six doses.

Sheridan's (ready made coffe liquor & cream in a double bottle, mixes in glass as you pour down);
...add something flammable (or professional bartender alcohol 85%, restricted use, lethal if ingested in large quantity) and set it on fire!

As for the single spirits:

Scotch - preferably Buchannan's 18 or Green Label, with anything from coconut water made ice cubes to pancakes to tall blonde and chocolate.

Vodka - Danzka (alluminum bottle) with concentrated orange juice - Nestle preferably - serve animally cold.
...this is not your common screwdriver, but a whole new world. Mix to your taste, drink it a lot, night long, chatting with a girl friend.

Well, I can't really remember everything, specially after having it...
Jaegger is great, but I can't do the heresy of drinking large quantities from the bottle, I take it slow and calmly and at -5C to 5C temperature.

Rum - Caribean have some good stuff, anything else, no way. But again, I wouldn't waste good Coke on drinks. neither good Rum.
Tequila - Hijos de Villa from Mexico was a pleasant surprise. It was a small gun-shaped bottle so hadn't time to try mixes.
...Two variations, silver and gold (reposada). First is more straight with agave taste, didn't try gold yet but should be more subtle.

Try Four Roses aged (not the std version) bourbon instead, but be ready to wake late next day at a next seen before place.

Cheers mates, some good advice there. Too much to reply to everything but a few thoughts where they spring to mind.

Yeah, I've drunk a lot of JD, it's the most common bourbon around these parts. Got stranded on an uninhabited island once because of it.

Anyway, having tried some high end bourbons (and grown up a bit, and slowed down a bit) I'll not be going back to it. You really can taste the difference in quality.

I've only had tequila in margaritas, and shots, so I've never really tasted tasted it. But I have a bottle there which I haven't opened yet so I'll be giving that a try.

lulz. yeah, it does sound like it but it really doesn't taste like it. In fact you could probably describe it as a bit of a girly drink. Very very smooth. And it doesn't taste of egg in any way. 2 oz of your spirit of choice, 1 oz of a 1:1 sugar/water mix and a whole raw egg. Add a few ice cubes and shake hell out of it. Then strain into a chilled glass and grate some nutmeg over the top (though I can't say I even notice the nutmeg tbh). I haven't tried it with any white spirits yet but the formula supposedly works across the spectrum.

Yep, had a few of those back in the day. And my other half likes them so I've been making a few lately. Tried a couple of taste tests with a decent white rum, with Malibu, and even with an old half bottle of a cheap malibu knock off still in the cupboard from the old days. Funnily enough we actually both preferred the result using the cheap stuff. That's OK, I've no aversion to saving a few pennies and it's not something we drink a lot of anyway.

lulz. been there done that. Waited a bit too long one time drinking flaming green chartreuse shots. The glass heated up so much that when I drank it I scalded a joker's grin on to my face. Don't do that any more  Tongue

milk punch.

i tried it a few months ago while in san francisco and i while i was skeptical in regards to clarified milk, i must admit it was delicious. the drink (besides the milk) has several variations and can contain almost anything in terms of a base alcohol, tea, fruit juice.

the best cocktails i ever made or tried have consisted of classic drinks with infused alcohols.

so far, sage and lemon is my favorite when it comes to gin. tequila goes well with habanero and lime. kraken... is perfect all by itself... but tastes amazing with fresh muddled cherries.
