Elvira vs. Gamera vs. ?
#1
Probably off-topic and liable to get deleted but....
One of the free streaming channels I get with my Samsung TV is SHOUT! TV and they've been running the old syndicated ELVIRA series all day. They're running GAMERA SUPER MONSTER (I think that's what they're calling it) and man, did that film just raise a middle finger at other Japanese franchises or what? So far, I've seen the Yamato do a flyby, Gamera bitch-smack a Godzilla movie poster and possibly try to hijack the Galaxy Express 999. Gamera also looks like he/they/it are trying to hump the other monster to death at some point in most of the fights.
And a building.
You had to see it.
I can't remember the last time I watched this film but I know it was probably not a year that started with the number "2". I've been working on an online live riffing competition (kind of the same way "Whose Line" is a competition) and I'm seriously considering this film but it's almost too easy, particularly because the people who made it seemed not to give much of a shite, either. I've intentionally been staying away from a lot of the monster genre for various reasons but this one's almost literally begging for it.

And the film ends on a "Space Woman" taking a young boy's hand and telling him, "Now, I'll show you the world!".
OMG.
This is some serious "Can You Read My Mind?" material....

You've sold me on that description alone.

For anyone interested. It's also very easy to rip from Tubi using Youtube-DLG. AS I may have mentioned before, I do heart me some Elvira. She's really funny.

I was watching on the SHOUT! live channel. I'm glad her first syndicated series still exists and gets some play. I hadn't watched any of those for a while. None of the stations in my market carried it and I tried to get the station I was producing a couple of series for to pick it up but they felt they had movie hosting covered. We already had a kid-friendly vampire hosting movies on Saturday afternoons and a much more adult focused hosted film series on Friday nights. But she was the first horror host for a lot of audiences and helped keep that local host genre alive for a long time.
And yeah, Cassandra is really funny. Amazing how many comedy legends came from her era with The Groundlings.

I've been watching the episodes of Elvira's original "Movie Macabre" on Shout Factory TV. They don't have a ton of them but out of 6 seasons, they've got at least a few episodes from every season except Season 5. I'd kind of like to know what the deal is with Season 5 but after watching several episodes, I've noticed something really curious.
Season 6 was sort of a "reboot" of the original KHJ-TV series they went straight to cable and syndication. All of the nudity is blurred, as you'd expect from a broadcast series.
So far, ALL of the KHJ episodes have uncut versions of the films, meaning that some episodes are loaded with nudity and graphic sex. Now that's fine by me, those are two of the elements that made the 60's & 70's horror films what they are but there is NO way KHJ ran them this way.
I intially thought they could have put the episodes together like this and edited the broadcast version from this master. It would be an odd way to do it. I worked for a local station in the early 80's that had two film hosting series and every film that came through was edited by the film dept. before any of those guys even saw them.
I also thought the unedited scenes or original versions of the films could have replaced the edited broadcast versions later but the run times for the episodes are correct for a 2 hour broadcast slot in the early 80's. Plus, why bother? I doubt anyone even dreamed of something like a home video release back then and that's the only market these could have been used for at the time.
If anybody in our movie riffing/hosting braintrust has any knowledge or thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them.

Probably one of my favorite lines from a host or riffer -
At the end of "Monstroid", Elvira tells her audience, "I got paid to sit through this stinker, none of YOU have an excuse!"
The great thing about the whole horror hosting genre is that they're always brutally honest about the films they showcase while hosts for other genres try to justify their selections in some way. When's the last time you saw someone like Mankiewicz look right at the camera and say the film you're about to see is a complete shitfest?
But we say it with love......

This made me LOL.

I'd love to see this.  TCM needs to do a bad movie night or have someone properly host the TCM Underground on Friday nights.

Okay, I suppose looking at Wikipedia first might have helped.
There was a third option I didn't include on my list, which was that SHOUT! Factory replaced the TV edits of the movies with uncut versions for home video & streaming release. That being said (well, typed), some of the prints they used were beyond atrocious. But hats to possibly the geekiest media label there is for even bothering. The audience is watching because of Elvira & I highly doubt switching the films earned them an extra cent. It was done because, being media geeks to their cores, they wanted to see the uncut versions to be seen. For a lot of these movies, this is probably the most media attention they've ever gotten and the most attention they're ever likely to get.

Absolutely! They could use some other hosts who appreciate certain genres, too. Mankiewicz looked like he was making a hostage video when he had to host the "Godzilla" marathon.

Agreed about Underground, I love it but I wish they had a designated host - I actually thought Joe Bob would have been perfect before he got his Shudder deal. There's a few TCM people who do a podcast relating to the Underground (I think they help program it?) and one of them should just do the intros.

Do you have a link to the podcast, good person?
